Then my short list the 5159.... the fact that there is only 1 picture sums it up itself! Oh no!!!! I had such high expectations and just felt so underwhelmed! The day and month seemed so narrow! I guess it was to give the balance to the thickness of the hour markers but I thought it just looked odd and not in sync. Thought the retrograde hands were an improvemt but the guilloche a bit of a half attempt!! Yes Roman numerals are appropriate for officer case type watches but I was just so underwhelmed in all the metals I didn't even bother to photograph!!!

Then the thought was that as most of my watches were white gold and many had blue dials perhaps I should go for rose gold / platinum with a opaline dial for legibility or grey dial. I thought the new 5396G with sunburst grey was fantastic and the suggestion was thus the 5140P-017. Mmmmmm just didn't connect with me...not sure if it was hour markers or what!! Think it was CHF 90 000 which gave me a furball...but it felt small ...so it was a no!!

I asked why PC are thinner than AC as I would have thought it would be the other way around. Seems all to be down to the rotor! I guess I better read up on that but PC fits better for me under a cuff...

So moving swiftly to the next choice which is the 5327 and based on legibility the 5327R. I loved the breguet, the colour and legibility. However, date is still in a dial format and we not ticking all the boxes just yet!!

I think if they did a 5396G in a PC I would flash the wallet open!!

The last on the cushion was a watch I sometimes struggled with legibility and didn't meet the date dial criteria and that was the G. The line up was slowly coming together.

So it looks like the white gold on blue can be difficult but I was wrong in the 5205R so I better just check it out again and also with a shirt cuff!!

and yes I know we get hot and bothered about ALS movements and how some German pixie scrapes away in some time honored tradition a couple of swirls and elevates the movement but this sure aren't bad for something I believe is 35 years old....

and sadly the story ends like a damp squib!! I think we all can guess the end conclusion!! It doesn't really matter if you can't read the time nor the date...the dial is so pretty!!! But let's not be hasty...it's the top contender but we can't dismiss FPJ just yet even though I thought my Geneva Salon experience (unlike my experience in Miami which was brilliant) to be piss poor!!!

So did they know you weren't buying or did you tell them right away?

I would love to go here but would feel a little weird knowing I'm not going to buy anything. Maybe a rose gold nautilus on a strap but thats pushing it as i would rather just buy it from a trusted seller and save some money.

I like applied hour markers. I feel printing is cheating for haute horology!!In reality the date marker wasn't that easy to read and generally it was a quick no!! The date makes it a bit fatter at 11 mm
5496p GORGEOUS!!!!

Would you consider the 5270? You could try it on while you're there

Nice write-up! I still fondly recalled my last trip to Geneva Patek Salon 2 years ago. It was a most memorable and enjoyable experience and a rare opportunity to check out all the hard to find and rare pieces. I still remembered being so blown away by the awesome Perpetual Minute Repeater 5074R. Enjoy!

Really great report Karl. I loved your analysis of what you liked and did not like. Good luck with your decision, looking forward to the incoming!

I personally love the 5930 and the 5940 although I agree as I get older, the little wheels become harder to read.

Great read! Thanks. Not sold on the 5327. Wonder why they didn't drop the 3 and 9 numerals so the dial didn't feel so jammed. But really liked the case.

Really great thread Karl! Just goes to show you no perpetual is perfect. The 3940 to many is too small. The 5140 has the 5 and 27 smashed around the moonphase. The retrograde calendars have an odd cutout between 15 and 17 for the leap year indicator. The 5327 as Jay stated and I totally agree looks very busy with the Breguet numerals right up against the subdials eventhough the case is to die for. In summary, the decision is easy...3448 In all seriousness, All those pieces are beautiful in their own little ways and we learn to put up with some of the perceived flaws of each. Looking forward to whatever you decide and maybe the piece just doesn't exist yet. I'd enjoy the hell out of the 5524 and 5930 and see what gets released for Basel 2017. (Sorry to be the wait for next year kind of guy)
