These kinds of park accidents/tragedies are becoming more frequent due to environmentalist/arborist efforts to preserve what they consider to be 'heritage trees' (essentially an old tree of questionable condition).

There have been several local incidents of fallen trees/branches on summer picnics and public gatherings in addition to those from typical winter storms. Warning signs are often posted but in the more remote areas, they usually aren't.

While it's great to save trees (if possible), when they pose a safety threat I have no problem taking a chainsaw to them. Unfortunately some of the older trees have become like whales to the more hardcore ecologists.

As aforementioned in an earlier post, the structural condition of the tree and its base is critical when mounting something like a hammock due to static/dynamic weight factors.

That is exactly the scenario that happened. Another issue in the city here and elsewhere is the lack of watering of urban trees and the undermining of root systems that are surfacing looking for moisture.

Thanks she is still recovering from the effects of the concussion but is expected to make a full recovery. They anticipate a year or perhaps longer. Her doctors were amazed she walked out of the trauma unit after ten days. Original prognosis was very grim.

I'm just seeing this for the first time Patrick, thanks for the info, and glad to hear your little girl is getting better! She sounds like a tough little fighter! Thoughts and prayers are headed your families way!

Thanks Trace for your thoughts. She is a fighter that's for sure. Hopefully others will become aware of this issue.

Wow...I never really thought about this. I use my Eno all the time and I have hung it from some sketchy places. Best wishes on her speedy recovery.

ALWAYS test your trees vigorously before resting in your hammock! Stay safe friends!

I never much thought about it either in the past. Not now.
