I understand that this is not all that important, but every single picture of a crown on Rolex.com is perfectly aligned. Every one. It is not unreasonable for Joe Q. Public-Non-Wis to expect his first watch to come that way too. Joe will know better for his second . . . .

Funny Dan . So why do the Sky Dwellers line up? I put a photo of my Sky Dweller last time this came up and to my surprise, my crown was “lined up”. Then someone posted that all the Sky Dweller’s crown “lined up”. I was crushed. For those 2 minutes, I actually thought that I was special .

Well, you know me, a post with out a pic is boring...

@jps3b
Only the PM SkyD. Not the SS. Maybe it was an experiment for Rolex. No other Rolex reference does other than by luck of the draw. Not even the flagship Day-Date

The crown on my Explorer used to be perfectly straight up and down, but with time I guess the gasket has compressed a bit and now it points just a smidge past 12

The false premise here is that the crown is, or has, anything to "line-up" with.

I've found that to be true on mine and my wife's watches. Our crowns have moved somewhat since we bought them new 5-6 years ago. Hers originally lined up but now does not, mine never did. I haven't really cared either.

Yeah but the obvious inference is they mean the crown logo is upright, perfectly perpendicular to the shape of the case. Of course, you knew that. Total OCD issue in my opinion.

Next we will hear that Rolex advertises watches at 10 past 10 on the 28th and mine didn't come like that.

I am going to nominate TRF Moderators for sainthood. I can't imagine HAVING to read through some of this repetitive crap.

This is by far the closest any of my crowns have come to lining up.

Rolex could certainly make this happen. But everything comes at a cost. And that cost is passed down to the customers. Plus over time I believe the crown would likely become off centered just due to tightening it against the gasket. And then people would complain about it not lining up perfectly.

On one of my 3 watches, the crown lines up absolutely. On one, it’s perfectly upside down. On the third, it’s at a 90 degree angle.

Set the crown wherever you want it.

Makes no difference to pressure resistance.

That’s the job of the internal stem seals.

There are three "screw" elements.
The screw thread in the case, the screw thread of the stem that screws into case, and the screw thread of the crown.

all three pieces are mated (screwed together) as tight as possible.

Not sure if you could engineer all 3 of those threads to always match and lock at exactly same position?
Exactly - and also consider the variable thickness of the outermost compression seal that the crown screws down onto. As the o-ring ages and squishes further the crown will turn a little more before seating.

Don't know how they do it on the PM SkyDweller but I suspect it must have an adjustable element to correct for the three threads and get the crown to align.

Surely they could make every single crown line up if they so chose but prefer not to bother. Would you miss the uniqueness of the quirk if they were to stop doing it?
When was the last time you indexed the Spark plugs in all your engines?

When you start doing it, let us know.
Then we can get behind you in your big push at Rolex to have all Rolex logos on the Winding crowns line up to a specific datum point of your choosing.
When we've finished with Rolex, we'll go after another one of all the others that don't have the decency to align their logos on their Winding crowns.
Our aim will be to knock one manufacturer off at a time until there is nowhere for them to hide.

Be sure to also stipulate any angular tolerance you deem to be acceptable so as not to set the bar too high and give us all reasonable guidelines to follow.
Keep in mind that once we have established full compliance, then we can tighten the acceptability criteria.

Keep in touch

Yes, by all means.
But Rolex stipulate time and again that in order to ensure the water tightness of their watches we must always screw the crown down. It's on their website.
