Surprised at the replies above.
My response would be dynamic, it'd depend on who it was, their age, their level of sobriety, the type of crowd in the room (aristocracy, drunk kids?), my mood, how much I've had to eat that day, what my wife is doing.. there are many, many more variables... and it could range from walking away or engaging for a time. So tell us OP what did you do? |

What would you do ?
I wouldn’t take it off and then I’d politely ask him why he’s condescendingly asking about my watch, and then I’d politely tell him it’s authentic.
I’d never tell him it’s fake. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Not sure what I’d do... I know what I wouldn’t do. I wouldn’t take my watch off.

I would thank them for any complements and keep my watch on my wrist. I would let them have a look, while the watch was on my wrist, if they wanted. No touching, no nothing. If they made a crack about it being fake and me not letting them hold it I would respond they would not if it was real or fake if they held it so why take it off. We would then go from there based on what they say. I would not say it was fake to just get off the hook from dealing with this directly. I would also evaluate what type of party I was at and the people there. Might be time to go.

Nothing good can happen taking your watch off your wrist at a party

When they said "nice watch" maybe they really meant it.
Why do you believe it was said in a condescending tone? Plus, assuming this person is a friend of a friend, why not give them the benefit of the doubt and politely engage?

Probably say it's a fake so as not to prolong the conversation.

You just met the person, he/she is a stranger to you, you really don’t know their demeanor whether they are kidding or serious by their tone of voice by just meeting them.
Say “thanks”, show them the watch still on your wrist and then go from there. They may have a Patek or Rolex on their wrist to show you and strike up a conversation. This happened to me at a party, guy commented on watch, he was also a watch enthusiast, we spoke a while, he became a client!!!! |

I think the best course of action is to politely end the conversation and move away. No reason to discuss your watch with a stranger who says it is a fake. If you confirm it is a fake the person could attempt to damage the watch since the belief is it is of no value or maybe no one should wear a fake anything.

I'll drive my wrist between his eyes to test how durable ceramic bezels are. Then ask if he likes my "time piece." JK
I'll probably take it off my wrist, hand it over with the Rolex warranty and box for good measures! :) |

I’d say, “I’m never surprised or offended when I hear people like you say that, since only a Rolex owner would understand the vile nature of that insinuation.”

These are wonderful responses. All are polite and gentlemen like .
I think I will go with the , “thank you” , flash the watch, maybe a quick blurb about the model and it’s functions and then walk away . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Say "thank you, I quite enjoy it". Show the watch ON my wrist. I'd never take it off to show some party lizard yahoo.

Given the impression of the opening remark was that it was of a condescending nature, I probably would say something along the lines of "Thanks, but it's not what you think it is. It's a very good fake with a good Swiss movement in it".

I assume someones intent is good, generally. If I just met them, I wouldn’t assume I can read them well. I would show them my wrist and go from there. If they end up being a dick, I would just shut it down.

If someone said "Nice watch" to me in a negative or condescending way, I'd just say thanks showing my wrist for an up close look if they want and leave it at that. No need to prolong the interaction any longer than it needs to be.
