I use a credit card for everything (paying it off every month). I like the reward points and I'm also scared of counterfeit currency. Many think this a thing for the movies, but after 20 years in LE, I can tell you counterfeit currency is very prevalent in the US. At least if my card gets compromised, the card company immediately rectifies the issue. On the flip side, try and pay with currency you thought was real and turns out not to be, you are just out that bill.

That’s a great example of how to use credit right.

Side note...
I was at a gas station yesterday that only took credit/debit cards due to the Pandemic coin shortage in the U.S.

I use Credit & also pay in full each month :)

Card. Lots of point you can use for cash back or travel. Pay the balance off every month, turns into a debit card really just with more perks.

With all the perks and simplicity coming from using a credit card - I cannot fathom using cash for 99% of my purchases. However, sometimes it is needed.

There is absolutely no reason to use cash in this day and age.

There is also no reason not to accept card payment in a shop nowadays given the ease to set it up now. The fees you pay for card transactions (typically 2- 4%) should not materially affect your bottom line no matter what size your company is compared to the benefits of accepting cards.

Only reason to only accept cash is if your up to no good imo.

I purchase everything on credit for the points/miles. I'll keep a little cash in my wallet or car for tips.

What about the guy that did some work on my lawn? He didn’t have a credit card machine that I saw.

Not sure about US, but over here in Europe (and Asia), there are a host of P2P transfer apps (such as Revolut, N26, Wechat, etc.) that everyone I know of has at least 1...

Example is I play football with group lads every week, we all just transfer €5 to the one person to pay, using a P2P app like Revolut, it's as easy as 2 taps on the phone.

The ony time I was forced to use cash in past couple years is the odd meal at my old favorite Chinese restaurant who only accept cash, obviously for tax reasons...

In my area of the US - almost everyone takes a credit card - even the people cutting the lawn. I think that it really matters on who the business owner is and if they want to or desire to stay modern. At least in the US - there is still a large market of people who live with the mindset of 'cash is king' and because those people still represent 20-25% or more of the buyers market - but as that market ages the service providers will have to change. I am "younger" at 38 and most of my friends who are my age or younger are cashless for the most part and I see the younger generation getting even more cashless.

Amex for everything i can. I always carried cash, mostly for golf, pre covid. Now, i never have cash. I leave a little bit in my golf bag but outside of that, cash is becoming a hassle.

Both. Whatever is easier. Cash for small purchases. When golfing, I can't buy a beer on the 3rd hole from the beverage cart with a card. Gotta pay off or collect bets in cash! I tip in cash - dinners, drinks, etc. Haircut, cash. I pull out $300 ish a month and it goes. Gas, food, supplies, etc., credit card, pay it off every month.

Card, but always keep a grand in cash. Enough that if something goes wrong like an outage, I can get to where I need to go. Small enough that if it's stolen, it won't hurt. Plus need gambling money for golf, cards, etc.

Not to mention if you are mugged, if the mugger goes away happy, they may be less likely to harm you. Seems logical, but I've never been a mugger, either. . .

I’d feel naked giving up my wallet. “Spectacles, testicles, wallet and watch” is a mantra a good friend of mines dad used to beat into our heads. Every morning before I leave the house I think of it.

I always use my credit card with the mentality to build up points even on non-bonus point purchases. But now I’m considering going back to cash for everything (except for purchases with point bonuses) to set a further example for my kids to budget and that you don’t just swipe a card and you get whatever you want.

This could be a moot point considering it seems retailers are more and more getting away from even accepting cash and also not much is open here in Los Angeles due to the pandemic.

Electronic payments also gives big tech an advertiser profile of your purchases that they can then sell to advertisers. Another benefit to the merchants at the detriment of the consumer.

I agree cash can be dirty. But is that any different than what has been going on for years? If anything, money supply is greater and velocity of money is down. So cash should be cleaner now than it has been historically.

Since the pandemic, my junk mail has increased due to restaurants emailing me whom I never signed up for promotional emails. They are people who I have paid with Apple Pay/Square/etc.
