Disagree, with the current bracelets (where the Jubilee has the same heftier clasp as the Oyster). The two are about as similar to each other as the GMT's Oyster and Jubilee are.

Well, there is an association with equestrian sports if you follow Rolex ads.

Swimming, too, if you recognize the oyster case’s heritage.

But now that Rolexes are so expensive, fewer folks are willing to risk doing thousands of dollars in damage if you fall and get road rash on your Datejust.

I think either an OP or smooth DJ on Oyster make fantastic all-around watches. Dressier than a tool watch but dress down well.

So, dress-sport watches?

Not from aesthetical reasons but from practical/mechanical point of view: why would you not play "sports" with a DJ fluted bezel jubilee bracelet?

Is a Jubilee bracelet less robust than an Oyster one, Fliplock aside?

Fluted bezel = WG and therefore more prone to scratches and dings
Jubilee = it depends on era since previous generation didn’t have as thick a clasp (not sure if that actually matters)

Assumed we were talking modern. Haven’t been any DJ with fluted steel bezel in ages as far as I know.

Does a Daytona count as "sports watch"? I guess the polished bezels show scratches more prominently than a fluted WG DJ one.

It’s a watch, don’t fret about categorising it, just wear it and enjoy it as it is after all a stunning watch.

Perhaps, but that one is more ceramic and either way, won’t gouge put dent as easily.

No - without the mercedes hour hand they are dress watches regardless of the case, band or bezel.

Is the Smooth Bezel Datejust a Sports Watch?

Yes it is.
Exp1 and DJ are pretty much the same watch other than an extra crown gasket and fliplock on the clasp.
So if exp1 is a sports watch so is DJ.

Tell that to the Daytona and the Milgauss.

You mean OP, not DJ, right? Because DJ also has a date and PCL.

Agreed. It may look “sportier” with a smooth bezel and oyster bracelet but technically NOT a professional sports model. Just wear it and be happy...

jubilee with smooth bezel, the best of both worlds.

Smooth on Oyster is the sportiest of the DJs although I don't look at mine and think sports watch. More like gada piece with a classy touch to it.

All Rolex are "sports" jewelry. Accept it or do not. Some have specific complications which few use. Even GMT is just set to local time for the majority. I am told and have observed that many women don't even set the time.

The definition of "sports watch" has also changed much over the years. The JLC Reverso was intended as a "sports watch" when introduced (to keep polo players from damaging their watches) but I doubt it serves the same function today.

All Datejusts and Professional models (of which the Datejust is one) are sports watches. You'll get a thousand different definitions of what constitutes a dress watch (and I don't necessarily agree that it must satisfy all of these criteria), but the typical characteristics of a dress watch are: precious metal case, croc or lizard strap, minimal complications (usually time only), and smaller diameter/case height. The Calatrava is probably the prototypical dress watch though there are many other examples.

That said, I do wear my Datejust and IWC Portugeiser as "dress watches," but I understand they don't meet all the criteria mentioned above.

My 116200 just came back from the spa. It has the silver / steel tux dial. It is so perfect again and the center links are scratch free. Watch just glows in any situation.

I think you missed the bigger question: Does auto racing count as a sport?

The dealbreaker for not being a sports model is the clasp. Not having the flip lock on the datejust would bother me in certain situations.

I wouldn't consider a DJ a sports model. I consider it a dress watch. The sports models can be used for casual events or dressier, imo.

1) Why does it matter

2) The DJ 41, whatever configuration, is the same size or larger than most of the sports models. Dress watches are technically thin watches on leather straps

3) DJ are waterproof to significant depths, have robust metal bracelets, etc. I think a lot of talk about DJ being a dress watch doesn’t apply to the modern watches

4) I wear my DJ swimming, with shorts, with suits, etc. It is an all around watch. But so are almost all Rolex watches.
