You’ll have the typical gnashing of teeth about athletes being quarantined over positive Covid diagnosis, hand wringing from the media who will give some “expert” armchair quarterbacking how it was too soon to do the games, and spoiled athletes from western countries coming to the games with a political agenda.
In other words, nothing worth watching. |

Such a waste of resources. Not sure why they still have olympics.

I wonder how many who have expressed no use for the Olympics ever attended.
Had watched 8 before the 1996 Olympiad here. Seeing the live competitions makes it far more exciting. Thus, the 2020 Olympiad one year late without spectators is going to be tough methinks. And perhaps many asterisks for the record books if anyone gets scratched from a Finals due to positive test results. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I am not worried, I have other things to worry about. haha
I think most if not all athletes are vaccinated, or they are basically super human so the virus should have minimal effects on them if any. For the rest of the people, the virus will do what the virus does. I do watch the tracks and fields, swimming, volleyballs, cycling.

I seem to remember a lot of complaints in the US about NBCs coverage being too US centric and not covering enough of the games and other countries. Too rah-rah USA.
While I guess it's a massive undertaking to cover something like this, I rarely watch any of it unless I stumble on something and get hooked. I guess what I don't really like about it is the fact that it is such a make-or-break career promoting thing for US athletes instead of being about the participation in "games". A few gold medals and you're set for life a la Bruce Jenner (remember him), Michael Phelps, and some of the later iterations. I guess I'm sort of bothered that a hundred or thousands of a second will define your life, but that could be more of a US thing as well. But it does seem strange that a great swimmer or gymnast defines their financial future away from their sport by a couple of gold medals in the water or gymnasium. I'm really not sure if other countries are the same in this regard. It almost seems more fun for the pros that go now, where it's a competition for fun and ego, and afterwards they go home and back to work. It doesn't define their life or worth.

I'm curious to see which events survive Covid scares, as in the village with the athletes I'm not sure they can all really control themselves, and see which events have the best Olympians competing and which ones get decimated and a real wildcard wins the medals, could really be a lottery of a Games.

Although I thoroughly enjoy many of the summer events, I gravitate more towards the winter games, myself. I will still likely tune in for updates on the men's weightlifting (although women's WL is likely going to be male dominated, now, too...), crew/rowing, and a few of the track and field events. No matter what, it is still an amazing feat to make it to the world stage, I just wish every athlete was as proud of representing their nation as in previous games. |

Very much so. Best city in the world in my opinion and had been looking forward to being there for the Olympics and Paras since it was announced. Not to be.
Still no word regarding refunds for tickets, not surprisingly. Re the competition, I just wonder how much COVID will impact participation. No doubt it will have major impact in one sport or another. |

I look forward to seeing how the men do in women's sport. Should be interesting tv commentator commentary too.

Way more than that. There are more US positives than that; gymnast, tennis player, basketball player are the headlines I saw.
It’s definitely going to impact outcomes, I just wonder by how much? By that I mean favourites and stars taken out through a positive or worse perhaps through being a close contact. |

More bizarre is that the testing or regulations to “level the playing field” only exist in events from 400m to 1 mile. There’s a reason for this, and in time the regulations will be expanded as more data is collected to prove the advantages which these athletes have.
But for now, if you fall into the DSD bucket (differences in sex development) my understanding is that’s fine so long as you’re not in those events. This is surely not new, it’s just we are very much aware of it now. Every Olympics presumably has had athletes with unfair but natural advantages. And we haven’t even begun the doping discussion ! |
