I have a 5513 and a BB (original version from 2012) and the BB gets a lot more wrist time. I'd probably sell the 5513 first if I needed the cash.

Congratulations! Sorry to hear that you let the 5513 go but you're happy and the 58 is a solid choice.

Not trolling , didn’t have to let the 5513 go, didn’t need the cash.

The 5513 I sold was a beautiful plastic and flawless matte dial visual delight.
Objectively the 58 is a considerably better watch in nearly all aspects.

My original attraction to the 5513 was the “cool by association” factor.
For me it conjured up images of Steve McQueen, Paul Newman, Connery Bond, issued milsubs and commercial divers. Effortlessly cool.

I had planned on leaving it to my son but honestly all of the history of that watch was presumably with the previous owner[s]. I hadn’t taken it to Vietnam or climbed a mountain while wearing it nor had I swam in the sea or scuffed it on rocks and mud.
What I would end up leaving behind is someone else’s now fragile watch no real family connection other than I occasionally wore it but not while doing anything that might damage it.
It wasnt the same “cool by association” watch because it couldn’t be used in the same way. It was now old and practically functionally inferior to modern watches.
I can’t imagine bond or McQueen removing their watch putting it on the table before getting into a movie bar fight.
You get the idea.

Now it didn’t conjure up images of issued tool watches .

Rolex has ‘for me’ become an increasingly less attractive brand.
I now think of instagram pictures with strategically placed Ferrari steering wheels . Sunny pool /beach photos. All with #Rolex tags.
The forum posts. About which is the best investment watch, “help me decide on my own watch to buy” how best to cuck up to the Dealer etc.

The madness of paying above retail price for the grey dealers abundant stock of watches while the AD have very little.

Personally it’s all a bit Try too hard.

Interestingly enough I went to buy a seiko and while looking through the dealer window at the Tudor display the dealer sales person came out engaged me in conversation and sold me a 58.
I feel good about that, I didn’t suck up or take chocolates or pop in every month to show worthiness.

No offence meant to anyone just explaining my thoughts .
I still own a Rolex - good solid under the radar watch.

Oh and I’ll probably still buy that seiko.

Love your attitude and totally agree with you about patina and vintage watches with someone else’s history.

Trolling? So what if he is. This is suppose to be fun. I intially came on to find out about changing hands on an older AK. I received all of the information I needed in 10 minutes. I decided to stay on for fun. Sometimes it is fun, however, it itseems like an extremely conservative crew that is very quick to judge. Come on. This is about watches.

Hey Innocenti, I didnt read your latest before I posted. I feel very similar the way you do. Unless post is about a Daytona or GMT (BMW steering wheel) haaa. doesn't seem to get any respect. Weird. I like the 58. Curious how their in house movements will hold up.

I’m sure it will be fine , certainly good enough. It’s lost about 4 seconds since I got it. But if we wanted to know what the time really was we’d look at our phones right?

My son in law wants a Rolex , probably to go with his Nike trainers and tracksuit, no sure which one I don’t think he knows either. Just big and shiny with loadsa instagram wrist presence .

I have two Air Kings. Both wear on a Nato. The 14000 with the switched Mercedes Hands I dont wear too often. Newly serviced and runs like a work horse. The 116900 I wear all of the time. Does not get any looks really. That is why I like it. No nonsense, just the time easy to read. Will last me until I die. Then one of my nephews will get it.

Nice watches

I was tempted by the new 36mm explorer.
But honestly the thought of walking into an AD and feeling like they might be doing me some kinda favour kept me away.
In my mind I know an explorer (or any Rolex) isnt really worth the RRP , that’s why they spend tens of millions on marketing and sponsorship to convince us that it is.
I can just about if I squint justify the retail cost with some reverse Jedi mind trick. But all the other hoop jumping and cavity searches are too much for me.

So far the 58 is really growing on me .

No longer a tool watch or practical as a watch to dive with .
50 years old and beautiful. But as an old watch is was arguably inferior to most modern watches.
As it’s cash value increased its value to me decreased. The AD waiting list and grey dealers situation has for me diminished the brand and I suppose my relationship with it.

I actually went to buy a seiko captain willard and a Tudor pelagos fxd.
Couldn’t find a seiko or fxd to try on but the 58 seems like a solid enough watch for now .

I love this thinking. It’s what’s cool to you, not the masses, that matters.

Something I thought I’d never do.

Here’s my review of the 58

- it’s nice.

Happy new year everyone.
I don't think I'd ever have sold a 5513, and the BB 58 just doesn't do it for me, but that´s just my humble opinion, don't bother what others think. Do enjoy your new Tudor! (By the way I loved your review, although I found it rather verbose: just "Nice." would have done...!!)

I agree I didn’t think I’d ever sell a 5513 before I owned one. But after a few years of ownership I realised the quality of the watch was probably good in the 1960s 1970s

Now it feels the same kind of quality as something you would buy from from a car park market for $30. The level of watch doesn’t feel like a $15k $20k or $30k+

I think people are either into vintage or they aren't. Generally speaking I'm also the latter. I like looking at vintage pieces, and can appreciate them for what they are and what they represented at the time, but after handling a number over the years I can safely say I have absolutely no desire to own one. Vintage build quality, acrylic crystals, hollow or rolled metal links, patina.... all of that leaves me cold.

I even found the bracelet and clasp on my (departed) 16610LV and 14060M a little too "vintage" for my liking.

@Innocenti - the most important thing is that you're happy with the change, and it certainly sounds like you are.

Good point
I would describe my self as a vintage watch guy.
I think a couple of factors are at play though.
A disassociation with the brand and what it has become.
The watch as I said before started to feel a bit silly. Who uses a dive watch for diving anymore? A dive watch you wouldn’t wear in the shower . A tool watch you take off for most physical tasks or adventure.
It’s monetary worth had increased while it’s value to me diminished.

If it had been my dads watch or a friends watch, there in would lie the true value.

However a nice gilt dial 1016 I could maybe justify that

Love my 58’s but no way I could get rid of a 5513 for them.

Nice looking watches :)

I didn’t get rid of the 5513 to buy the 58. No reason I couldn’t have owned both.
I sold the 5513 for all the reasons stated.

Compelling story Innocenti. I totally get it. Kudos to you for your logical approach and sharing your narrative.

My BB58 Blue gets plenty of wrist time and is highly wearable!
