I’ve bought all my watches on the secondary market. I’m not prepared to wait on a “maybe” and have have to beg for one, which unfortunately is the case England.

I have no problem with admitting that

The vast majority of "regular" people can't afford to spend 30k on a watch.

The question was $30k BLRO, not just secondary market watches.

That’s the easy to admit part.

It's difficult to define "regular people". It will depend on many factors. According to my view of my little universe, a regular person wouldn't buy a SS Rolex for 250% of its MSRP.

I know a few people who would think nothing of dropping that kind of money on a SS BLRO if they wanted it. Some of this cohort would consider it a bragging right. I'm sure they and their well padded peers consider themselves to be regular people.

Yes they are. Regular people won’t want to play games or wait/not get a watch at the AD. Authorized Dealers look depressing and extremely uninviting.

I am far beyond a regular watch buyer but I have owned about them all and only buy from our “Trusted Sellers” the last few decades.

I think this is how a lot of grey market sales work and I suspect this helps to keep somewhat of a floor under prices

I have been at the collecting watch game for more than 30 years and have found that everything typically gets more expensive with time. Will we see market corrections, sure. Will we see times when specific watches move up and down in price more than other models in a line-up, sure. In the end, fair market value is determined by what people will pay. It is also difficult to predict pricing trends with limited data over a short period of time. Sit tight, pay attention and lets see.

Simple answer for me...I have the ability to buy the watch at that price but refuse to. Not that I don't think the watch (insert any watch for that matter) is worth it based on the current market, it's really what I feel the premium is worth to get it now. So, yes, I will gladly pay grey pricing when there is a number I feel is worth it to NOT have to play the AD game and/or the waiting game. When that watch (or any watch) hits a certain number I feel comfortable with, then I know it will be on my wrist the next day. That premium is worth it to me since you cannot go into an AD anymore and just buy whatever you want.

But to me, 30K is absurd. 20K and I'd purchase today and wear tomorrow. I've never sold a single watch and don't plan to so I don't care about future value. My children will inherit my collection.

Have a friend in oil and gas industry. High net worth and high income earner (7 figures plus annual). Owned 2 watches before getting a Daytona. Looked at the market price when it was 30k, pulled the trigger and moved on. Didn’t bat an eye when told the price after a quick bit of research.

I suspect that the type of buyer who walks into a grey dealer doesn't even know the MSRP of the watch they are buying.

They saw it on Instagram (or here?) and "need" to have one.

My guess is yes plenty. No one on any forum shares when they are paying "market price" and those that pay MSRP are shouting from the rooftop. You will never get the facts but my guess is yes plenty or the prices would not be that high. Non watch people don't even know about gray dealers. They walk into a watch store and walk out with what they have and like.

if you want to get a BLRO, do you think its even possible at the AD with no purchase history? You still going to have to spend tons on other "not what you desire" models before you are "maybe" allocated with a BLRO, those other expenses are also money...

Some just dont want to play the game anymore, buy from grey, enjoy the watch :)

another opinion that I have is that we are not sure if today is the last day of our lives.. you never know.. so if you can afford it and really love that particular piece of rolex.. go ahead, spend and enjoy it.

These were my chances on my 515 so Grey it was but its all relevant. I know this thread is about a BLRO and would I pay the current pricing on a BLRO?

Nope but I do go Grey from time to time and when I do I look at what my "net exposure" is and go from there. Did I trade/sell a piece that I acquired at MSRP and so on.

this.

I recently paid just over 20k for a while dial Sky-Dweller. I don't see them dropping below this and I doubt I'd ever get one at msrp

30k is way high. I think a lot of these prices are dealer to dealer flips and artificial price structures. That being said…if these ever drop down to 23-25k again they’ll sell quite regularly.

I'd agree. The dealer probably already has a buyer at a given price so the 25K purchase nets them the margin they want?

Some people are paying this much for one, absolutely. How many people (my guess is not a "large" amount), and whether they are "regular" people (whatever your definition of that is) may have large swings before coming to a median measurement.

The market has softened over the last few weeks, but it tanking is really unlikely unless we are in uncharted waters now. Historically, things will dip->stabilize->start rising again. The crazy jumps we've seen the last two years or so has not been the norm until now, neither is the crazy demand. Turns out if you print 40% of the currency floating around in a single year people want to spend that free money, and they want to spend it on something nice that will hopefully appreciate.

The stock market is really volatile right now, and there is certainly an argument to be made for people anticipating the Fed raising interest rates to combat inflation from all the free money, the effect being that people are more hesitant right now to throw money into things.

Just my 2 cents, I know many members here would essentially be unaffected by a recession so what do I know.

The greys I check on a regular basis seem to be able to move them at that rate which is crazy in my opinion but proportionate to the overall market. However, tide seems to be turning a little. Think it'll just be a dip and then bounce back. Still more than enough people with enough money out there. I can see "regular" folks (like me) cashing in on their gains for watches they purchased at MSRP. I could trade my Hulk for a Pepsi and essentially get it at MSRP but I like it too much to let it go and I have a BLNR already.

Agreed, I went Grey for my Bluesy in 2020. Why would I not admit that here? As to the watch price, it’s value, etc., we don’t discuss those here

No, it’s basically bought, sold, and traded along speculators, investors, and the gray market. The “average” person who walks in thinking they can get a hold of a gmt, sub, Daytona for a graduation or retirement will quickly learn they are no longer open to them as they had for the previous 50+ years. The majority of the planet live on less than 10 bucks a day, so no regular folks won’t get one.

Yes it is a real number. I also sold my previously worn Kermit for $19k and my previously worn two tone Bluesey for $19k to the same dealer. I never wore the watches as I did not care for the look on my wrist.
