I have upgraded, and had no regrets. I’m not sure if I have a “grail”—but I’m at the point where if something new comes in, something old (at least one) has to go out.

Yes and I would do it now.

Steel Daytonas are only going to go up in price and most* of your sell watches are going nowhere. Do it now, enjoy your grail. If in a few years you want variety should be easy to get out

Yes
However there is a caveat and that is to be sure of your grail

The first time I did this was for a Daytona and for me the idea of owning a Daytona was better than living with a Daytona.

Once I learned my lesson and able to try on exhibition models or have patience to handle them watches at a GTG my next consolidation was/is a dream come true

This really comes down to personal preference as opposed to what others can offer you for advice.

Do you like having the variety and option of a rotation? Are you someone who likes having a collection even if you don’t wear them often/at all? On the other hand, does having too many watches give you a bit of anxiety? The answers to questions like these will lead you down the right path for yourself.

With all that said, I have seen many people attempt this and then grow bored of the watch they thought was their grail….and hopefully at that point you’re not one of those people that regret selling all the watches you just had. Just be careful selling anything of sentimental value if that applies..

I'm sure I've traded a few to get one. I almost traded 5-6 and cash, but backed out. I would do that trade to get your grail, as they are replaceable, unlike those birth year pieces, which I would agree...and keep!

Yeah....kinda. About 38 years ago I sold 3 items (not watches) to purchase a Lange from a Boston WIS. We had been communicating and met at a Boston restaurant where I looked over the watch & box and then we swapped money for watch and had a nice meal.

Traded a Rolex Explorer II (2012) for a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms with bracelet and Sailcloth and I would do the same thing all over again. A brand new FF at $15,000 would have been out of reach for me for a long time, so this trade allowed me to avoid several years of saving up.

Easy choice. If you don't wear them, let them go. Selling can be hard at the moment. Trading is the way to go at the moment. And trading them for a 116520 is a fine choice. Should you regret it's an easy sell later on.

I have just bought a 116520 white dial. Had the 116500 white dial for 3 years and loved it, but sold it when prices got ridiculous last spring. I love the 116520 even more, but I could see me buying a 116500 again at some point.

In 2000, the YG Daytona with black subdials (an actual panda) called a Paul Newman dial was featured on multiple watch magazines and I lost my mind over that watch. So I traded a YG Daytona on Alligator strap, a SS Submariner date and a Breitling SS Chronomat for it.

It was most definitely worth it as I had less in the three watches I traded than what I paid for the gold Daytona and now it’s kind of a vintage beauty!

I understand the why or screw down crowns but I have gorilla hands and hated having to take it off and unscrew the crowns to use the chrono. And the PCLs while look great was a mismatch for my lifestyle.

Bottom line….gorgeous but not practical for me

This is one man’s opinion and Your mileage may vary of course.

Add a grail like a logical progression in my journey, sure. It can be that special watch in the watchbox .

Replace my tried and tested collection made of solid, dependable and handsome pieces offering plenty of satisfaction on the wrist and packed with great memories? Nope.

I have done it twice. Collapsing 4, 5 or more watches into one spectacular one can be neat. But I inevitably missed some of the pieces I traded. The key is to get something you can wear every day. I went to high end complications which are nice but not everyday beaters thus the need to refill the arsenal called.

traded in my barely worn Cermit towards a YG Day-Date 36; while i too do not subscribe to the notion of a 'grail' watch, it's fair to say the Day-Date was something i always deeply coveted. Zero regrets here!

It has crossed my mind a few times to trade my entire collection for a Dufour Simplicity 20th anniversary.

However, if I manage to get my hands on the RRCCII and Vingt-8 (due in 2026), I will not trade these 2 away.

I’ve consolidated 3 ss Rolex into a single pm, didn’t last, I like variety.

Having two or three is enough, but one wasn’t for me.

I’m in a similar boat, although I don’t have any Rolex’s to sell for a Daytona because I sold them last year (personal matters).

The Daytona (ceramic) has been my personal “grail” watch since it was first announced but of course I’ve never been able to get one. I sold my second favorite Rolex (The Hulk) last year and regret that one as well.

Thinking of selling 3 of my 4 current watches to ether get a Hulk again or try to get a Daytona. Only issue is, I’m a big Bond fan so it’s kind of hard to let go of my Omegas.

-Omega Seamaster “NTTD”
-Omega 300m “Spectre”
-Omega Planet Ocean 8500 “Skyfall
-Tudor Pelagos 39mm

I’ve never done it… but one day possibly.

I’m not sure what it would be for though. Possibly a Patek perpetual calendar chronograph would be the piece

Russ, that looks fantastic on you. I was lucky enough to obtain one from my AD not long after launch a couple of years ago.
Although its stealth it's an absolute stunner.
Well done and big congrats.

Anyone here sell/trade multiple pieces for one grail? Was it worth it?

Yes, for me. I have since traded the grail for another grail plus a couple of other (grailish and not) watches. Still waiting for one. It's all good. Grails once obtained can lose their sparkle. But half of the fun is progressing in the hobby. It's part of the rites of experience. Traded 18 for two; Traded one for three. The first and second trade ended up with me also getting watches for my wife. The other part has been rebuilding the diminished collection with watches I wanted more.

First grail:

Second grail and one more to come:

I'd do that. I can't say I've done it myself, but in your case it seems worthwhile (and nothing irreplaceable would be sold).

For context I have a reasonable collection that I am grateful for—lots of people on here have incredible collections. 116500ln, Pepsi, the explorer 2 with red hand and engraved Rehaut, and a yg meteorite Daytona on OF, a Patek 5905P and I think a 3146 (an annual calendar with moon phase they don’t make anymore). Anyway, I find that I need more than one watch. One for work, one for the weekend, one for formal events (although I need a calatrava or something for that), one for hunting and banging around. So one watch isn’t practical for my lifestyle. That is one potential consideration. But I am probably rationalizing myself to why I need more watches, lol
