Save up for a few years and get a 16610.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I am going to be doing much more research here. For sizes of the watch, especially vintage, what would an acceptable size be? I'm 5'6 so I'm not a huge guy, but at the same time I don't want something that looks super small on my wrist.

I think it would be good for you to see if you can try on some of the watches in person. Maybe you can join a local NAWCC chapter or watch meetup group. Size is a personal preference and also depends on the size and shape of your wrist. In general, watches below 35-36 mm ate less popular in general. But some people love 34 mm watches. Hard to generalize.

Would it be best to be looking for watches that come with the band, or is buying just the head of the watch and getting a band okay?

Either way is ok, but it can often be more expensive to add a bracelet separately, and of course it requires detailed knowledge of the bracelet. Still, if you get a fantastic deal on a great head-only watch, then you should buy it and worry about the bracelet later.
