Using the watch as intended? Was the watch intended to be banged around when gardening and during auto work? No. It's a tool watch? Is that what my 116618LB and 116619LB (like the beaten Smurf above) was intended for. A step further, a gold watch in 2020 to take under the sea to scuba?

Look, clearly the makers, that being Rolex, appreciate the evolution and use of these watches. Yes, they are robust and can take a beating, but the original intent as a tool watch is no longer the intent or purpose of the manufacturer and the mere making of the precious metals or bi metals supports that they are aware that those are not the anticipated or intended use of the end-consumers either. And there are far superior scuba diving "tools" to be had on the wrist to keep you safe and alive, then a sub, gold bi metal or otherwise.

I wear my watches. All of them
Everyday: To work, to hang out, etc. I'll enjoy keeping my pretty and cute like the instagram photos I see...you may feel to obtain scratches dings and dents with not only no care but a sense of pride and call it memories and character. No worries. Enjoy

Brand new 12/31/2019

I celebrated an incredible year in 2019 with this.
Always wanted one.
Damned if I don’t wear it.
And I’m retired, don’t garden or fix cars.

Well used Submariner thread!

My 5513 which is 42 years old and unpolished. Full of scuffs and scratches but still runs perfectly. I also wore my 16610 from 2001 to 2018 literally everywhere until one day its case back loosened up and almost felt out. Today I take better care of my watches.

TRF when folks post their babies watches:

“Get the stickers off and start using it! These are tool watches!”

TRF when someone posts a well used watch:

“Omg you’re ruining it!”

This can be a funny place sometimes.

To the OP, I say well done. Well worn = well loved

These pictures are taken in direct light to emphasise the scratches - with the brushed finish, these scratches aren’t even noticeable on the wrist.

Rolex brushed finish is fantastic for durability.

Spot on! They are not very visible in daylight.

Good to see that OP is enjoying his Submariner.
Mine usually look like that after about 10 years.
Wear your Sub in good health,OP.

Not since the 1960s.

I swear you guys came up with that term to justify such a large purchase to your wives. “ but baby it’s a tool watch. I need it to tell me how much air I have in my tank“

Even when submariners were used for diving it’s still was a wealthy man’s accessory to time tanks.

It’s your property, you paid for it and if you wanna bang it all up that’s totally up to you and you are free to do so. I just wish there were some rule that before you ever sell something like that it must be disclosed to the buyer what it looked like before you had it polished.

I recently posted this elsewhere, but this story of an exceptionally well used Submariner Date might fit in well on this thread :

Based on your threads, you wear your watches with fear and covered in plastic.

I'm a little bit of both parties. My Sub is covered in scratches and is worn basically anywhere, anytime. My CHNR is babied much more, but still has been scratched and hasn't given me a heart attack. More will happen and it won't be the end of the world.

No stress now that I have my watch protected. Enjoying every single day! :)

I'm not sure what to take from your thread so, you banged and scratched your submariner a bunch of times and the lugs and case are damaged with multiple dings, and if you polish it you will lose ALL of your factory sharp lines guaranteed, no matter who does the refinishing, even if you have laser welding by Rolliworks or anyone else who claims that they can do lapping, and casework you will never have the original manufacturer finish/edges... Then you concede "babying" your TT GMT, and sensationalize your post with reference to a "heart attack"? I'm glad that you are proud that you kept your GMT fairly decent. And I'm sorry if you are upset about the condition of your sub. Like you said, "it's not the end of the world" kind of a cliche saying, and no one suggested it's the end of the world. Enjoy as you wish.

PS, do you have a large phone that is less than 1/10 of the value of your jewelry with a case and screen protector? Just curious. Thanks.

Wear all of my watches everyday, but I do take them off when doing things I know can damage them. I was headed out one day in my 75 911 with PMO carbs and as I pulled out of the garage the idle was off. I was wearing my 5711 and hopped out to adjust the idle mixture screw, normally I wouldn't wear my watch working on my cars but since I was dressed to go out I didn't think twice n the moment. The screw on the carb cover plate scratched the polished part on the bezel. I don't look at that scratch and think its patina from being loved, it reminds me how stupid I was not to take the 10 seconds to take the watch off before working on the car. Each to their own tho

Lovely piece smym18! Wear it well.

I think some folk take Rolex ownership far too seriously. It’s just a watch. I won’t be getting mine rounded off by RSC, no thanks. If it ends up too beaten up in a few years I will simply buy another and start again.

Not sure why you took such offense to my post. You've been very vocal about your OCD on the forums.

If I ever decide to refinish my Sub, who cares if it doesn't have the "sharp lines, finish, edges?" Does it look like it has any of that now? It's crazy people think someone looking to buy a pre-owned watch would prefer buying it with someone else's scratches rather than a professional refinish.

To the rest of your rambling: Yes, I am more careful with my GMT because I wear the Sub more and at this point scratches don't matter. Yes the GMT is scratched and not a big deal. Yes I made the heart attack comment because there are countless threads on here, yours included, though not even directed at you initially, where the sky is falling if a watch gets the tiniest scratch. Upset about the condition of my Sub? Far from it.

And I use a thin matte finish case on my phone for better grip. If it wasn't so slippery it would be naked, like my watches.

no offense taken whatsoever, but there you go again, "the sky is falling".

By OCD I mean hypersensitive to scratches, especially when left by other people.

I am not surprised that you claim that you would not care if you lose the factory finish and factory sharp lines, as you clearly do not care about keeping your watch in decent condition. Well, you do now with your two-tone, the submariner, well, that ship has sailed. Your property, your choice.

Stay safe and enjoy and good health.

Edit: to answer you question : yes, absolutely, your edges remain factory sharp.
