Anyone here with over 10K posts is probably a serious long term member and not in it for short term gains.

Neil, this also gave me a chuckle because you know there are plenty of people with high post counts that only post garbage.

If there are people on this forum buying $8k watches (and that's retail) and DO NOT know what a 401(k) is the world is completely screwed (as is these people's finances)!

Fair point, Exador, but in my defense this is a thread about how Rolex prices are tying in to the global market which seems to be reacting to the potential coronavirus pandemic. Point being, this seemed to be a high level finance talk so I would assume participants would be well versed on global finance trends and terminology. I live in the US, but know about European pension/retirement plans (PERP, ForderRente, etc).

I do concede that my comment had an air of American imperialism rubbish and for that I apologize!

DOW went down to 24k in January 2019. Don’t remember how that effected Rolex pricing as I wasn’t paying attention. If I were 20 years younger I would welcome a stock market dump. Buying opportunity. Takes balls , but investing is always painful.

Does anyone really buy a watch like they would a mutual fund or ETF. To me that’s crazy. It’s a friggin watch.

The difference is short term vs. long term. Fairly sure no one is holding Rolex watches as a long term investment vehicle. The main topic just spiraled towards investing/401k talk.

Matty, Pantheon, newu5er, Nairn, Uggi, RTG, Geck - I am dying here. You guys are freaking hilarious. Funniest forum award.

The very close win goes to Uggi. Shorting watch prices? Freaking hilarious. Genius.

Luxury brands want higher prices for image, brand identity, snob factor or whatever. They laugh at these boards when people harp about prices - they're the buyers they don't want. There's a wide world of watches dive in.

Well, here's one aficionado, who has no interest at all in any "potential short-term economical upside."

Maybe, "...most of the members here wouldn't be collecting if there wasn't a short term economical upside..., but there was a time when that wasn't so.

I look forward to the day when the speculators move on the next hot thing and leave the board to those who really appreciate the brand and love our watches for the joy they bring us instead of some short-term financial gain.

This board was a lot more fun before the nicknamers and the hustlers dominated.

I am disgusted with it. Reminds me of Air Jordan Collectors from the 2000’s and 2010s. The filth that certain people put on YouTube is even worse. I miss the days of deciding whether to buy an LV, Daytona SS (either dial) or Explorer 2 (floating hands) in Scottsdale. I don’t respect the motherhoods that YouTube has made of this hobby

It is not just the CoVid-19, which may just be the nudge over the tipping point. 10s of banks in China will not survive a 1.5% downturn without being propped up, due to huge bad loans. These are not tin-pot small town banks. If the central banks are already extended to support the industries hit by CoVid-19, then there may not be enough to go around.

OK, so what! It's only China. If China gets trouble, the world does. It's not just China production that is hit. Western factories are slowing due to parts not being shipped from China. Western companies products are not shipping from there. Also China is a major market for western products and services.

Also in the west, the checks and balances which were put in to stop a repeat of the banking crisis, are being removed. So experts have already said, the next bubble to burst is stocks due to inappropriate indexes.

Add to the fact that none of our money is worth what it was due to quantitive easing, then the worst case, is bad.

But it will be fine, I have a Rolex.

Think it's American for "pension". Not sure why they don't use the word "pension" though.

Brilliantly said and I completely agree. This forum is not what it used to be when people actually came here to talk about watches not shopping strategies, pricing arbitrage and comic books.
