Black sub date in SS. Best do it all, go anywhere, match everything wear it every day watch ever made IMO.

OP 39 is great too and readily available and relatively affordable. I have one in Rhodium and love it. Very clean, simple, elegant and in the sun it looks fantastic.

I like the OP 39 better than my 36 datejust for sure...It's a great piece!

Daytona is great if you can get one but not as legible as a Sub and no date. Sub is really the best for a daily wear beater than can clean up and look great with a suit.

Intentionally leaving this open causes issues because then people simply apply their own preferences to the question.

Like if you tell us you live in a trendy part of town where everyone grows out beards and looks homeless whilst actually being millionaires that's different to someone who lives by the beach vs working at front of house for a restuarant...

this is really not answerable without more info. Otherwise people will spit out their fav Rolex.

The best Rolex for starting your collection is one you like. I'll do the same with mine.

Simple, buy what you like the most. There’s no one size fits all approach to collecting.

The one a person loves and can afford is the best start to any collection.

I've had Datejusts, a Sub, and several Yacht-Masters, including a mid-size from the 90's. My favorite is the Yacht-Master (I have the Rhodium 40 now). It fits nicely on my rather small wrist and it is very versatile, going well with a polo shirt or a suit. My "sage" advice after all this rambling? Shop around, try on several different models, and buy the one that YOU want, not one for anyone else. Best wishes for many years of enjoyment with your new Rolex!
A great post.

I truly don't think there is a better starter Rolex than the Daytona C (black or white). if you have no restrictions, why not start at the proverbial top?

Buy one that you like. One that you've looked at over and over. And, hopefully, that you can afford. Good luck! # 2 will be on its way soon!!

Yacht-Master if you like it and don't care about resale.

Beautiful, comfortable, versatile.

The explorer is a good option - but if you want true Rolex history, and aren't a fan of the 3, 6, 9 numerals - the OP in 39mm is hard to go past, plus, you some dial colour options! From there, you can get your name on a Submariner wait list (if you buy the OP from an AD) - a sub and an OP would cover 99% of people's' needs.

What we want.. however.. that's that completely different story!

Best Rolex to start a collection?

The DayDate is the quintessential Rolex known as “the President”, but they only come in precious metals and are rarely a first Rolex.

Among collectors, the Sub is the most popular Rolex model and these are often a first buy: no-date for the classic look or with-date for a modern look.

The DJ is the Everyman’s version of the DayDate and is typically the model for those desirous of a more traditional watch without printed movable bezels.

My first was a Sub and you can’t go wrong with any of these. Good luck with the hunt!

When these threads pop up, I always answer with a Submariner.

If I could only have one watch, it would be a Sub. It is the prefect starting place for building a collection.

Realistically you will probably want to start with the good old Datejust. Truly a fabulous watch...and you can buy them at your AD!
