Yeah, that one's come up before, maybe a few years ago when the grey market price of the 5711 was $75K. And now we know why the people who weren't selling then, weren't selling.

The idea is that if you claim you wouldn't buy a 5711 for $125,000, yet you own a 5711 and aren't willing to sell it for $125,000 you are in fact saying that the watch is worth the current market price, to you, i.e. you'd rather have the watch than the $125,000.
This has been debated endlessly going back to the days when the 5711 began trading at twice MSRP with those who didn't own one claiming the price was ridiculous and those who did own one agreeing but admitting to not being willing to sell the 5711s they owned in order to take advantage of the profit they could make. James from San Antonio made the case that not selling was the same as buying, from the perspective of economic theory.
More importantly, as of today, anyone who owned and sold a 5711/1a has paid an economic cost and anyone who bought one has reaped an economic benefit.

Congrats OP on a beautiful watch, and on wearing and enjoying it. It's not easy to do at that price tag.

I think the "not selling for x is the same as buying for x" idea is only relevant if you look at watches as investments. I wouldn't buy my Daytona for what they sell for now, or even MSRP (lol), but love owning it and wearing it every day. Why don't I try to sell it for market value? Because, like OP, I bought to wear and enjoy. Not because it's a semi-liquid alternative asset investment.

I do find it interesting that OP seems to see no other alternative than that 5711s will continue to rise in value in the future. That may be true, and it's been true over the last number of years, but that doesn't always continue ad infinitum. We shall see!

Enjoy wearing it!

[Incoming] Call me crazy but...

Thanks so much Chiboy. I am enjoying it a whole lot to be really honest with you. It’s a gorgeous watch with the day light hitting its dial.

Btw it’s highly unlikely to go down I feel. I’m not saying growth in price will continue at the same rate but not going down. Unless we enter a war, or a huge financial crisis. Anyway. I don’t wanna sell it. I could be offered 170k EUR for it, 15k EUR more than what I paid 5 days ago. And great. Even if I’d get 250k offered. I would not sell. I wanna enjoy this pretty thing for the foreseeable future.

I don't know why I am so excited when I'm not the one who's buying it.
Congrats.

Btw... pink rubber band comes with the watch?? lol

Just be happy for the creator of this thread instead of discussing potential markups. He bought it because he likes it. There are 100 other threads you can discuss future prices.

HUGE Congrats, IMO it's well worth the 150/170k, I actually think that's going to be a bargain price soon...

Such is a special dial too, it can look so different depending on lighting conditions. Like having multiple watches in one, 5711 is the perfect watch, enjoy!

Thank you so much. You’re right! Dial is great. Is rarely very blue. And I like that it’s very stealth. And thin. It hides pretty easily under the cuff. I wanted to have the closest to the original version Genta designed. I like the 5712, 5990 too but they’re way too different than the original. If I want those complications, I’d like them on a different reference imho.
