The higher you are the worse the wind damage... I worked for the Miami-Dade fire dept for 31 years..worked during Hurricane Andrew, and can almost guarantee that most of those generators will fail...and they usually do not power the apartment...prayers sent your way

And you could lose power for days ...after Hurricane Wilma..most people didn't get power for 7days...

Irma, Atlantic Hurricane formed & on the way to ??

I know less than zero about surviving a hurricane. But being a midwesterner I would love to have this kind of warning for a tornado so I could get the hell out of the way. I get not wanting to leave your home and your stuff on a maybe, but Irma looks like a really angry bitch right now.

Alright. I think going to FLL isn't going to work, so planing on not going unless the hurricane dies out over Puerto Rico or another land.

All AA planes are suppose to be moved out of MIA by this weekend. Huge undertaking...

I just heard a FL official on TV, but didn't get his name or title, asking that children of retired/elderly parents, particularly those with special needs, come and help their parents evacuate.

From the Voyage Report...Grim:
....."The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service predicted there was a chance hurricane-force winds could reach nearly all of Florida by the end of this week, according to a wind speed probability map."

Airline waivers listed.

Predictably the concern on this thread lies solely with the US. I don't know how to read those maps but looks like Cuba and some other islands are due to be hit too?

Predictably, you found a way to insult members of the forum for no apparent reason.

Do you plan to contribute, or just throw thinly veiled jibes at the members from the US?

Anyone in the path of this storm is at risk.

Wow..

I'm sure if we had Cuba members, more Active DR members and Puerto Rico we'd all be wishing them well too. In any case I wish all the islands the best

Major damage being reported across the Leeward Islands, it has yet to reach the BVI and USVI. I am very worried for my friends in the USVI.

My family is in S Florida. I would find a way to get out of there if I could.
I went to help family in South Miami/Homestead back then. It was horrible. 1992,Long before cell phone pics. I'm happy about that because things did not look good.

Be safe my friends!

And Irma does look worse than Andrew. It's potentially horrible for whoever gets hit.
You'll be happy to know that I've 90% changed my mind on flying out there. I'm hoping that the AA flight she's on will get diverted on Friday morning into either JFK, CLT or ORD. Unless there's a major shift in hurricane direction I'll be staying put 🙏

Hope the apartment sustains no damage, she'll be devastated. I had her move patio furniture in, lock impact windows and crank the shutters closed. Her first hurricane too

I'm Thank god this didn't come in on Labor Day weekend

I fear for the people of Haiti . Homes and buildings there could not withstand a cat 5 and their infrastructure is awful. I'm sure a good amount of the population has no idea of the size of this storm heading for them

My sister/brother-in-law live in Naples. No water/fuel and limited food for two days now. They left last night to come home to Ohio as this beast of a storm may head North as it passes the southern tip of Florida. I expect the highways may be gridlocked by Friday/Saturday. Prayers and good thoughts to all people affected by this storm . Best of luck!!

95 is bad most days so it will be a nightmare as the storm gets closer. Most gas stations in south Florida are completely sold out so I'm sure there will be cars just littering the shoulders.

She filled her car up yesterday thank god. And bought canned food too. She has 12 gallons of water, that should last a week if she is stuck there., I can't belive the wind speed right now. It's brutal

Not completely accurate - some from Turks & Caicos have chimed it - as well as others in the island chains. Others in US have expressed concern for those areas due to smaller infrastructure. This is a global forum and we empathize with anyone affected.

If Cuban TRF members wish to contribute I'd be happy to hear their situation.

We are getting a bit of coverage in the UK but it does look like it will head towards USA after it has finished the Caribbean. Hope everyone stays safe.

I give credit to those who are well-prepared and stick it out. Since you did survive Andrew I understand your perspective. It reminds me of a Hunter S. Thompson quote:

"Who is the happier man?
He who has braved the storm of life and lived, or he who stayed securely on shore and merely existed?"

If you stay, hope you're in the first category. If you leave, there is no dishonor in security...

Be safe - another true story - I had several employees who lived in Homestead and supported Burger King's HQ. One's home was obliterated by an embedded F2 twister. He and family scurried down street to a neighbor's home as eye approached. That homes roof collapsed under a downdraft. They spent the next few hours hunkered down under mattresses. All lived but transferred to my team supporting the NC-based banks.

My granddaughter just weathered Harvey in Bellville, TX. They made it and still are helping friends whose homes flooded there and in Katy.

My brother, Goddaughter and several nephews live in Miami Springs. They prepped last Sunday with 6 kayaks and an 18' Whaler ready just in case flood control dikes/pumps fail.

My other brother is in Dunedin with his family. They could see worse than forecasted. If this goes along a more N-Nwesterly track much longer.

This system could follow Donna's path and maintain long-lived Hurricane status. Then, even my sister in D.C., and our TRF friends all along the eastern seaboard as far north as Long Island will be affected.

Prayers for all who are already impacted and those who will be.
