You would think that the gold would not turn the gold but not sure what chemicals they use besides chlorine, I would take it to the AD you purchased from and get there advice

Get it back to RSC. Or give it to your AD who will send it off to RSC. You surely do have your Warranty Card with you right? :-)
Imagine they changed the warranty card from "8" to "5" |

better get a sample of that water... bottle it and start a Rolex customizing business... a la Bramford. Who needs PVD? Just kidding.
I feel your pain, I hope you can get it back to it's natural color

I've worn my two tone sub in all conditions (pools, sea, sauna, steam rooms ) and i never have seen anything like this, I treat watches as tools that need to be worn and to be fair they all look in great condition.
I would return it to Rolex to seek further advice, I would never recommend that you use Cape cod on your watch unless its just a small area and you are confident you know what you are doing. Hope it gets sorted |

Seems like a warranty issue to me. Rolex advertises water resistance and I'm not aware of a disclaimer about pools. I have to imagine Rolex will take it back if this is under warranty. They changed out my crystal on my year old BLNR back in 2015 because I got tired of looking at a date that was not magnified well enough by cyclops.

Interestingly, I’ve worn my YG DD and my wife her TT DJ in a hot tub, on a daily basis, both sanitised by chlorine and latterly by bromide and neither chemicals affected either watch.

I would have the gold content tested. Perhaps it’s not 18k and had more additives for your watch making it a Rolex defect. I think we would all be more concerned with that over it turning red/brown. Bring it to a local gold dealer to have it tested

I’ve taken it to a SC and they are convinced that Rolex will tell me it’s not covered under the guarantee due to “misuse” but we’re going to send it off anyway just to be sure.

I am confident Rolex will address the issue. Take to your AD. I am with the others who stated it’s the copper in the YG mixture that reacted. People have been wearing YG Rolex in hot tubs for decades. It’s a mix (material) issue from Rolex.

OP, I'm terribly sorry that you have to deal with this. I really hope that the RSC sorts this out. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. I'm very interested to see how this pans out.

Has now been sent off to Rolex. Will take around 3 weeks before I hear anything apparently. Absolutely gutted.

We really need a metallurgist to chime in in this one. I’m absolutely positive it is reversible and probably just needs another bath some kind of neutralising solution and it will instantly change back to its natural colour. It’s clearly a chemical reaction.
I shouldn’t worry, it’ll come back like the day it was new. |

It is very common for chemical exposure to cause a surface reaction with the 25% of the alloy that is not Au. Admittedly 30 mins exposure to cause a reaction seems fast. As op has stated I am not surprised to hear that the chemical concentration is extremely high. Standard concentrations used in pools should not cause this type of reaction in such a short timeframe.
In theory you could bring a claim against the property owner/management/pool maintenance co as this could be argued to amount to loss suffered through negligence. From the point of view of RSC it’s not a warranty issue but that is not to say they won’t do the work as goodwill (after all the wheel that squeaks loudest gets the oil). Options are to replace the tarnished components which is unlikely going to be done for free, or a light polish to remove the tarnish. The latter is the most likely outcome. Sorry to see and hear this happened. Seriously consider this as a claim though, as it shouldn’t have happened to you. |

While I’m sure that is “technically” correct, there is a difference between dropping your watch in a vat of acid and bathing in a hot tub for 30 minutes. I think Rolex needs to make this right. This is a water resistant sports watch, and they have been marketing them as such for more than half a century.

Warranties are all about technicalities. If they were not it would be an insurance policy. There is little difference between a vat of acid and an incorrect concentration of chlorine in a hot tub. The watch doesn’t differentiate. |
