A few years ago, whilst I had just an EcoDrive Citizen on my wrist, a watchmaker friend of mine lent me his black dial 16570 for a week... And that's when the trouble started!

I've tried on my father's and cousin's Rolexes. I've let close friends try on my other watches. Just got my first Rolex so no one has asked yet.

A guy I know wanted to try mine on. He's not known for his being careful & so I told him that the replacement value is $8,500 & if he drops it that's what he owes me. Odd that he never touched it......

At my ADs I took off my YG Sub as I was trying on some watches and my salesman, who I had never met before, was drooling all over it but didn't ask to hold it. I then asked him if I could try on his own white Daytona as I hardly ever see one and as he handed his to me he eagerly picked my one up, and I thought fair enough as he was a lovely guy and very enthusiastic.

I've had customers hand me their watches and in return I hand them mine. I am far more nervous about messing up theirs as most of these customers own several such watches and usually 5-10 50k and up shotguns and rifles. I know if they dropped mine they would have no problem covering service/repair, but I am a poor man of limited means and my insurance covers me fixing their guns not dropping their watches.

If the situation is right, I have no problem with it. I've even done it with a stranger in an airport bar after talking watches for a bit. He had on a Zenith and I had my Blancpain.

I generally don't talk to strangers. Have gotten some strange requests in my time from strangers. Friends, acquaintances, anyone in a watch store or at a watch show, no problem. If I felt uncomfortable, I'd probably say, "Not this one, it wouldn't be right."

I usually take mine off and hand them to my friends if they ask about them. One of them had some movers steal his watches, a Panerai and GP. I offered to let him wear one of mine until he figured out what to buy. I wouldn't do that with everyone I know, but most of my closest friends would take at least as good of care of something they borrowed as I would. I value my watches, but I value my friends more. I love watches (and cars, motorcycles, guitars, etc) but it just "stuff" and it's really easy to let your stuff own you if you don't keep perspective.

It all depends on who it is? Complete stranger - of course no. Someone I've know for awhile - Yes, but I'm careful on how I hand it to them and the surroundings.

I have never had anyone ask. Would I let a complete stranger? No. A friend, co-worker or relative? Sure.

My brother in law has a vintage sub. Needs a little tlc, but its awesome and one day I hope to own a nice vintage piece. That is actually how I started lusting for a sub myself. I had no shame asking him then if I could check it out and put it on. He knew I appreciated it so much and was happy to share. Even until I got myself a sub I still appreciate his even more today. cheers.
