At the big firms in NYC there will be plenty of more expensive items in your orbit. Wouldn't worry about a watch.

Good oppy to get this watch. I personally wouldn't wear it right away, but feel out the environment first.

If anyone asks, you can easily tell the truth and say it was a present.

I just started buy side after my masters and I wear my AP royal oak everyday. No one notices or thinks much of it in any case.

Wear what you want.

I don't work in corporate anymore (moved onto higher ed), but I don't think that anyone really notices unless they are watch people. A colleague of mine has a few very nice watches, and he told me I was the first person to ever notice his vintage DJ or Bell & Ross. I think as long as you're not walking around with some Invicta monstrosity, whatever you're wearing won't get much notice.

Long story short, my family is in the jewelry industry and through a connection is able to get a new BLRO at retail. I absolutely love this watch and am looking forward to the day I get to wear it, however, I am concerned about its wearability in an office setting. I will be working for a large wealth management firm in NYC after graduation (think UBS, Wells Fargo) and will be dressing business professional most days, and other days dropping the tie and jacket.

I am a believer that a watch should add to one's outfit, not take it over, and I am concerned about the BLRO not being acceptable to wear in such an environment. Am I better off going for a DJ, black sub or Yachtmaster?

Thank you for any input.
Wear it, enjoy it and work hard. The significance of the BLRO is only known by those who are well educated about watches (and likely collect or appreciate watches themselves), to all others it looks like a steel Rolex - on Wall St that's like a Timex in terms of rarity. And honestly, most people don't even notice watches. As long as you work hard, no one can give you any crap that you wear a nice watch.

Wall St bonus season is at the end of March. All those kids, and I mean kids, will be getting their 6 and 7 figure bonuses. Too bad when they run down to one of the 6 ADs in Manhattan to get a Rolex and the cubbards are bare.

If you like the watch then wear it; it’s not a Patek. It’ll be fine.

I disagree with some of the comments here. Even if you're wearing a suit to work (tie or no tie is irrelevant from my perspective) I do not think that warrants the need to go with a dress watch as a daily. You can always add something to your collection down the road.

I was in investment banking for my first few years out of college and have been in private equity since then. Constantly meeting with bankers, consultants, and a whole variety of folks in the financial services industry. The most common type of watches I see on people by far are sports/professional-line models.

I don't think showing up to work with a new BLRO is overly flashy. It's under the radar enough (especially in in-door lighting) where it won't raise any eyebrows unless they're on the heads of fellow WIS folks. Showing up day 1 as a fresh post-MBA with a solid YG Sub is a different story.

Btw - if you can have your pick of any SS Rolex at retail through the family connection, I'd probably go with a DaytonaC first (assuming you like Daytona's). Save the BLRO for the next one! :-P

Absolutely not. It is a steel watch and blue and red are not offensive. The Hulk on the other hand is pretty loud due to all of the green and I would be more hesitant to wear that in a business setting.

I am wearing my BLRO at work right now wearing Adidas track pants and a yellow t-shirt and haven’t had any negative comments.

Is there really an environment so buttoned down and uptight that you can't wear a certain type of watch, which is hidden under your sleeve 90% of the time anyway? I've seen pics of senators and congressmen in session wearing GMT's and other watches with colored bezels

I’d wear something different to work. There are hundreds of watches better suited for a young MBA. And Congrats.

Your family knows how to get the BLRO at retail? Would they be up for adopting me? I come with papers and am pretty handy around the house

First off, thank you for everyone's input, and a special thanks for all of the good luck wishes.

I plan on going through with the BLRO for a few reasons, a big one being that I know I am going to get hooked once I get my first Rolex and I am sure more will follow from there (as well as other brands). This will hopefully fill out my watch profile, giving me more options down the road for certain events.

I am so looking forward to the daily joys of Rolex ownership that everyone on these boards raves about.

Cheers

I’m a yes vote on getting the watch, but I’d recommend generally not wearing it to work. At least wait until you’re no longer the new guy. All eyes are always on the new guy

Too flashy? No. Stainless steel Rolex is not over the top, off-putting, or loud. It’s a respectable time piece that is very versatile.

If you wanted to dress it down, you could source a brushed bracelet with glidelock (ref. 97200). Although, I do not think you need to dress it down.

I think a Submariner is more subdued and conservative for a business setting.

Do not wear a stand out Rolex in an office environment unless your in a management role. A flashy item is a great way to not get a raise or bonus. People are very judgemental and will think your made of cash.

Do not wear it
This statement is hilarious!! Are you a comedian by profession?

Under the sleeve most of the time and non WIS wouldn’t pay any attention to your watch anyway.

Zero issues wearing in business environment or anywhere really...I just got a comment on my BLRO today: “that’s a nice Seiko”.

Nothing flashy about it at all. As other people have said, most people won't know what it is.

I see all sorts of "flashy" blingy watches. I actually think Rolex are kind of understated. They are very nicely executed and classic in their design.
