My current thinking is the bigger watches look a little stupid. I had a SD43 and now can’t stand the sight of it.

My wrist is a 7.25 or so and 36mm looks just fine, as does 40, 44 and 47.
For me, a DD has a lot of wrist presence at 36mm. I don’t need 40, I think it’s way too loud. Some may think the opposite. And if someone thinks I should have a bigger watch, or “can’t afford the real one” who gives a damn?
Ultimately, just get whatever you want and whichever one you like most.

It all depends on your wrist size and general build. I have worn a day date president 36 and I’m a big guy and I thought it was ok

36 is smaller than my wrist and I have a thing for big watches.

36mm is the perfect size DD to me. I only wish that there were more 36 and 38mm options.

The way I read your thread is

"I'm pretty sure i'm going to think the 36mm is too small but its at my price point and I dont want to drop $30k on a DD40."

True?

What I've realised over the years is this is the rational for MANY ppl buying a DD. It also did cross my mind - why? Because at the end of the day money talks and bullshit walks.

Many ppl have PM'd me in private as well plus I know a bunch of guys in my close watch group that have initially bought a 36mm because of the price and eventually just got the 40mm. They ended up losing more money learning the hard way.

What I'm trying to say is you sound like you already know the answer. Yes its going to look too small on you and yes just stump up the cash on a DD40.

Also the DD40 is NOT true 40mm anyway. Its smaller like 38.5-39mm.

Barry White wore a 36mm YG day-date and it didn't look too small on him... So I guess a lot of folks can sport it too. Especially since YG is so flashy.

is DD36 too small?

Personal preference. For me it's okay.

I think for the DD 36 is the classic size and it wears big in terms of presence even though it’s on the small end of today’s spectrum

I'm partial to the 36mm for dressier watches like the day-date, but like the added variety of dial options that come with the 40mm. If you like a dial combination that only comes on the 40mm I wouldn't let the increased size hold you back, otherwise I'd opt for the more classic size.

Try both size first, which one you like it more, buy that one.

Don't settle for second choice just because of the price tag.

Agreed. The DD 36 in WG is versatile too.

36mm looks best but big watches are the trend.

My wife gifted me a DJ 36mm on our last anniversary and it was a wonderful gesture on her part.

Though when I first tried it on she did say it looked " smallish " and that she had thought it would be a good fit?!

I was okay with the size though at times I did wish it was a little bigger.

I'm currently keeping an eye out for either a Sub or an Explorer Mk 2.

Listening to your wife on wristwatch matters is seldom a good idea.

7 1/4 inch wrist here and absolutely love my 36. The watch is flashy enough in 36 in a 40 it’s obnoxious, imo.

I bet Rolex would someday release a 38 so that we can all meet and agree in the middle.

Tried on a DJ36 and it didn't work for me, but I'm more of a sports watch guy myself. Dress watch I don't really have a problem with 36. Think it looks good on most people unless you're rocking an 8 inch wrist (then again, Tony Soprano and Clay Morrow rocked them on TV, and those are some big dudes).

Too small for what??? If you can read the dial, it's not too small. Do you plan on using your watch to tell time, or is it a fashion accessory??? I bought my wife a 31 MM DJ, THE 26MM dial was impossible to read. We use our watches to tell time.

6’2 220lbs, with a 7 1/2 inch wrist. My 36mm white dial DateJust, gets more wrist time, than my SS Submariner Date. It’s the classic size, for that style watch. It’s a dressy/casual watch. My 40mm Sub is my sport/casual watch. My 39mm OP White dial is my everything watch. I think the “ Big ” watch was a trend. Rolex actually put out a new line of 36mm DateJust in 2019. I stick with 36mm-40mm watches.
