For me, my expenses I claim back over the year through my work usually equates to the cost of a Rolex Sport model and some change. Sometimes I use a 0% deal on a card and clear it in 3 to 4 chunks/tranches if time cannot wait for a specific deal. This way I can bypass the CFO/FD aka the wife. I am guessing this income is my fun fund which will be between £4k-£6k per annum.

I bought my Submariner when I was young and had plenty of cash.

It shouldn't be much of an issue, really. If you can afford it, you can afford it. If you have a hangup about personal spending, well, some people do. Do what you feel comfortable doing. It's just one pleasure in life, like buying only great food and eating well or enjoying owning art. If it's one of the pleasures you'd like to have, and you can, why not?

This was a great question and the responses are very insightful. TRF is a fantastic forum.

Personally, I don't own a Rolex, YET, but have one on hold for me at my local jeweler. This also seems to be the way I have been able to find the watches I want and also pay for them. This jeweler is an AD for several different brands and have found my Cartier, Breitling(s), and now my Sub-C in the "estate" section. They routinely purchase items that are classified as "estate" but have never been worn, like this Sub-C

What is even better, they hold the watch for me while I pay down on it, in case I don't have all of the cash up front. (lay away) I can also extend the payments if I use their 12 month interest free financing. This is helpful when you see "one of" something and don't want it to be sold to someone else.

Recently purchased a PAM, paid cash on it, but sold one of my Breitlings to get it.

Justifying is something that I think will have different boundaries for each person. For me, i don't make $200k a year, but i don't spend my expendable income on other things. I keep my finances in balance, save for retirement, make sure the needs are met, and then save up for one of these purchases.

BTW, congrats on paying off the CC's. That is key.

get one of those credit cards that offer 12 months no interest, go to nearest AD and just buy it !! and pay each month and before you know it the balance is zero.

I can't really justify it to my wife as she can't see spending all that money on a rolex so I just bought mine and payed it off. When she heard that I wanted a sub she freaked but I assured her I would save the $$$ first and then buy it. So I put aside some cash each payday till I have enough & then will place a call to one of our trusted sellers here on TRF for my sub.

I pointed out her engagement ring, matching diamond wedding ring, pearl necklace and bracelet, etc. Then I bought it on a credit card for the points and paid off the bill in full at the end of the month for the win!
I would never go into debt for something like a watch. If I couldn't pay for it outright I would have waited.

I don't think about the cost, the watch brings me more joy than the pile of cash. Ideally I wait until I have funds ready but if a no brainer deal comes along that I can't refuse, I will stick it on the c.c and pay it off. Rolex prices remain strong even in the current climate and if you buy wisely, the chances are that you will get to enjoy a superb watch and someday you will get your money back and maybe even a small profit. Its all about finding the right example at the right price. (I.M.H.O). I have been collecting long enough to realise that I don't need every watch, sometimes a good picture is all I need!!

A) Don't share too much personal info online.

B) Don't buy stupid things like watches with anything else than cash. And that is after you have taken care of all other responsibilities.

C) As the Robert De Niro character in the movie Ronin said: "If there is doubt, there is no doubt."

Exactly. Not to mention you can rack up a lot of points this way...so you are getting even more out of it. When I bought my sub-c, I put it on a no interest credit card and earned $75 cash back. I paid off the bill no problem and just for putting it on my card, I was able to get $75 off the cost of the watch!

What's wrong with sharing personal info online ?

If you don't know my actual name and address what's the harm ?

Sometimes it's nice to be able to share or ask a personal question anonymously, that you wouldn't be able to ask a friend.

Like this one, "Hey Pete, I know you are having money troubles in your business, but lets forget about that at the moment----take a look at my white gold submariner---I think I got an ok deal at the authorized dealer (he wouldn't know what I meant when I say AD)---you think this is worth 30k"
----------------------------------------------

Get the watch !

If it won't effect your lifestyle, and you aren't making payments....

Then treat yourself....you only live once....you can't take it with you-----(and when you die your wife is going to buy her new husband a Porsche with your money.......so show her that's not going to fly....buy the watch....so at least your wife won't have the money to buy the new hubby a Porsche, and he will have to settle for a Vette with those crappy seats)

If you are a watch wearer (as I am) don't feel bad spending extra $$ for a quality piece that you will wear every day of your life. My feeling with this and other large purchases is that I don't mind spending as long as you get good use out of it.

What drives me crazy is to spend money on something that just gets put aside and not used. Now that's wasteful.

This sounds like a question to ask good ol Suze Orman. HAHHA....She has that show where you can call in to see if you are denied or approved to buy something. I don't know why I watch it on MSNBC sometimes. LOL

I never feel the need to justify .. I see a Rolex I want, and I buy it if I am able .. I work hard for the money, so I should be able to do what I want with it .. Keep in mind howerver that I am not married .. That makes things a bit easier I guess

Given your history with credit card debt, I'd save up until you can pay cash for it. Although, considering that you make 200K/year, I think you should already have the cash at hand to buy the watch outright.

use the credit card but settle it in full when the bill comes.
besides the points, some credit cards also offered insurance for the first 30 days.

Ahhh... my wife just saw some pictures of the Explorer 42mm and besides thinking that it is very strange for me to be looking at other people's wrist pictures said "that is very nice", which I implicitly translate as "ok, get it". She should know better.

I'd like to know how you justify spending your ample earnings on whatever else you spend it on?
