So...what’s so great about the Daytona?

It’s beautiful, doesn’t scream Rolex. I don’t even think of it as a Rolex but Daytona. People ask what I’m wearing I say Daytona.

I've given this some more thought since I posted that photo. The Daytona retains much of the form and function of those sold most of it's life time. They've been used by many people with of course Paul Newman being the most celebrated. The 40mm size and lack of date has been it's trade mark for a long time. There have been variants of the dial but again it's pretty close to the way it's been for a long time.

Those who's eyes can't see it, perhaps they're just choosing the wrong watch. I love the fact that it can withstand immersion without jeopardy. The screw down pusher retainers are the way that's accomplished. The lack of date doesn't really present a problem for me as I can find the date anywhere (usually at the bottom of my computer screen or on the face of my phone when I'm using it.)

Rolex offers other chronos in the Tudor line; they're all larger and all have dates. I strongly believe in the heritage of the Daytona. I'm very happy it hasn't gone through the transformations that the Subs, SD, GMTs, and Exps have gone through.

It's one of the best chronos in the world and sized wonderfully, but it's far from perfect. There's way too much dial script, the asymmetrical lugs are odd, screw-down pushers are impractical, and the indices look like the result of a split committee vote. Frankly, the subdials are kind of uninteresting as well.

Even still, I want a black 116500.

it's the most comfortable rolex i own. it's not a small watch, has a perfect profile. fits under the cuffs very nicely....sits like silk on the wrist.
