It doesn't make sense. The 43mm Sea Dweller already exists

Maxi dial with ceramic bezel in old proportions would be astounding.

Apparently Rolex didn't think so. The one on the left hasn't been made in over a decade. Owned several 5 digit Subs and GMTs. All gone. Wear my 116618LB exclusively now. It is better in every way, IMO.

I agree and I’ll take it a step further. Supercase for GMT is alive and well. Why would they keep the Supercase for the GMT and not the Submariner?

No case change but I think they may do a TT rose gold or full rose gold sub.

I have no idea why people hoping or anticipating that Rolex would go back. They really don't care about what some afficiandos on some miniscule forum think. They can't make enough of what they are selling with people holding their hard cash waiting for their nut.

Rolex are only moving forward, we will probably get a new colour and new movement alongside minor tweaks. They might even go bigger, they will still have tens of thousands willing to wait years for a date with hottest chick in town.

I don't get it

I think the sub will stay at 40mm. I certainly would like to see the lugs go back to previous dimensions but, I don't think they will.

I don't understand why some people don't like the 32xx series watch movements. Mine have been superbe in the SD43 and the BLNR.

Perhaps a completely new model is on the horizon. The snowboarder with a thermometer, the mountain climber with an altimeter, the astronaut with a gravimeter.

Wow, so much passion and opinion on the possibility of a 42mm Submariner, great arguments for and against Rolex changing the size.

My take on the current range (based on the watch details and images on Rolex's website as I don't own either a Sub or SD) is that the Submariner case looks large for the size of the dial/bezel, whereas the case for the Sea Dweller has curves and looks as though the dial/bezel belongs to the case. The lugs in the images look thinner on the SD which IMHO gives the watch a better look.

So Rolex could increase the size to 42mm, thin the lugs and make a cracking new Submariner but this would take away that traditional boxy look that is enjoyed by so many using the existing 40mm.

Don't envy Rolex on this one, fans of the traditional look may well be up in arms whilst others will be racing to place their orders at the AD's if the size was increased.

Loving everyone's input and perspective on this.

Current sub aesthetics are perfection to me. I'm for the chunky lugs. 40mm is spot on.

I like the pre ceramic sub size. Although I’m biased because of small wrists
I hope it goes back but I know it won’t

I wish Rolex was lazy. Dust off the old 5 digit Submariner case tooling, machine it in the current standard 904L this time, with the modern SEL bracelet and Glidelock clasp, pluck a 3235 off the shelf and have a guy stay late one afternoon to fit up a ceramic bezel and start production!

Could it be a hybrid of sorts... i.e., a combo of a GMT/EXP/Sub? Could it be a whole new divers watch altogether?

So, product managers at Rolex grew the Sea Dweller up to 43mm to distinguish it from the Sub, only to have the Sub follow up to 42mm? That's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.

I mean they did come out with a DD40 (39.5mm) after the DDII (41mm), and the DJ41 (395mm) after the DJII (41mm).

I personally think they will keep the sub at 40mm. Just like the exp 2, they may release some version of yachmaster in the 42mm size in SS. Possible on bracelet. Possibly with a blue matte bezel or dial. Would be interesting. That would be a curvy 42mm on a case they already have. That would take up that space.

Interesting thought but would a full SS YM42 work?

I presumed that the YM was seen as upmarket as every watch has an element of PM incorporated into the watch. With a price premium of £2400 over the Submariner Date in the UK the YM40 is certainly classed as an upmarket watch.

If Rolex were to introduce a YM42 in full SS my guess is that this would undermine the YM line, I can see a YM42 in similar configurations to the YM40 and priced accordingly, but this would take the price well out of SS Submariner range.
