(But actually I think 39mm would be the perfect size for her but they don't make that now in the OP turk). I'm 60 and have bought watches for all my 3 sons so I've given plenty of thought to this. 36mm is not enough these days. It just look like a midsize.....a hand me down. Need to go bigger for a young man's wrist or it looks like somebody died and left it to them. Anyone who thinks a 41 DJ looks bloated probably thinks a Sky dweller with Jubilee looks ridiculous. The market doesn't think that and I don't think that. It's a DJ 41 on steroids and it looks great. The DJ 36 on the other hand is a lovely piece.....for a lady or a wee small litltle man with a less than 6in wrist. Not for a young man in his prime and not something he will grow up with and wear for decades..
Imagine feeling so insecure that you have to let the market decide what is good for you

Wow what a great looking watch Stan!!! Really really cool. I have about the same size wrist and I just picked up a 36mm Date Just and couldn't be happier. It's a great contrast/change of pace to my 42mm Explorer II. They are just totally different watches. The Explorer II is a no holes barred sports watch. The DJ is fancier and perfect at 36mm in my opinion.

In the words of the great Jim Ignatowski, "I don't know what's right, and I don't know what's wrong, all I know is the 36mm DJ on a jubilee is the most comfortable watch I've ever worn (and I've worn a lot of them)."

Ok, so I embellished the last part. But the jist is the same.

I have never been a fan of TT. I used to really dislike them, for me. But I saw this beauty on a gent's wrist standing next to me at Bangkok airport, and it converted me. The RG makes it, and the sundust is stunning.

Oh, and the green romans have always looked good.

I like your style sir.

Given that they are very likely to own it as early as possible, I'd suggest 36mm

Good luck!

100% this

I read the previous posts suggesting 36 in disbelief. You have to know your demographic. These are his grandkids.

And lol at people saying 36 will always be the standard. It’s not the standard now.

I have nothing against 36, but let’s look at the big picture here.

How about what just actually looks better on your wrist?

Or is that just too stupid an idea?

For the discussion in the current thread the “wrists” on which to judge what looks better do not yet exist — at least not in their mature form — as they are for the OPs current grandkids when they are older.

Certainly for some people, in 2021, a DJ36 may look and wear better. But if trying to guess what might be more fashionable in 2035, go with the more contemporary look and size.

After all men’s watches were once fairly common in a size 31mm, then a size 34mm, then a size 36mm… they haven’t really gone backwards in size over the years.

Right there with you. Somebody else has it in this thread with an oyster. I have it on a jubilee and it's a stunner with Rolesor.

But what a great sentiment here, regardless of size. I'm a bigger guy, so a 36 just looks off. The 41 is my sweet spot, with my other stuff I have that's 43.

Yes I understand the point you make in regards to guessing what size wrists the watch will be for and that’s a fair point.

My post however was referring to his generic comment about the ‘standard’ size etc.

It’s a bit of a non-story to me. You wear what looks and feels best.

I wear 32” wait trousers as they fit. Not 34” because I think most men wear bigger trousers and it wouldn’t be manly.

Okay, but I think the person you quoted and, at least rhetorically, asked if that was a “stupid” question didn’t write anything so offensive.

I wear 32” pants as well. 34” pants — and definitely 41” pants — will fall off my waist.

I’ve owned a DJ36, and I own a Sub41 — and many sizes in between. Neither would fall off my wrist. Pants and watches aren’t the same. A lot of watch size and fit is more subjective than other clothing items (pants, shoes, etc).

Ok.

It’s a topic we could go round and round on.

Some people like 36mm, others not. I just think some of the arguments put forwards are shite.

Thanks

Wouldn’t a DJ41 worn over a suit cuff be better in keeping with the virtues of sprezzatura? ;).

Or maybe a DJ36 worn with an unbuckled clasp?

Now wearing a 41 OP, although they measured it on youtube and said it is only 39.5. For the last 20 years wore a 36 DJ and still love it. But with aging eyes can't even imagine buying a new 36.

I last posted on August 22nd about my decision to proceed with the 41mm instead of the 36mm.

Here is the update:
I visited 3 AD's and put my name on their lists for a 41mm Datejust, Oyster bracelet, smooth bezel, stick markers with either a blue or black face. All three AD's said the blue face was harder to get and might take as long as 12-24 months, but the black face should be available sooner.

Much to my pleasant surprise, on September 18th I got a call from one of the AD's telling me the exact watch I wanted with a blue face arrived and I could purchase it if I still wanted it.

Needless to say, without hesitation, my wife and I jumped into our car and drove directly to the AD and purchased the watch. What a wonderful experience at this AD. Everyone in the store, from my salesman to the other salespeople to the security guards were smiling, courteous and pleasant to talk to.

I asked my salesman if I could order the same watch with a black face for my other grandson and he said yes and put my name on the list again.

Then on October 6th that same salesman called me and said that he had just received a 41MM Datejust that I might be interested in - a 41mm Datejust, Oyster bracelet, fluted bezel and a white face. He sent me a photo of the watch. It was not exactly what we were waiting for, but considering how long it might take to get the watch with the smooth bezel and a black face, we decide to purchase the watch.

I still have my name on lists at the other two AD's for the watch with the black face. If one becomes available within the next year, I will probably buy it and consider selling the one with the white face. If not, the older of the two grandsons will have the first choice as to which one he prefers.

Thanks againg to all who responded to my original post.

34 mm used to be the average size for a mans watch fifty years ago.
Times change and people do get bigger.A Rolex can last for ever if it
is looked after.I would go for a 41mm without a doubt.
