Great topic Jay, thought provoking for sure … thanks for posting it

I’ve thought about this topic too from time to time. I think I’ve also read a few articles or maybe it was mentioned in a few You Tube videos as well … this idea of having one watch that sort of becomes part of your history. I fancy the notion. I just don’t know if I could pull it off

Outside of this forum, I think most people would think it is nuts to have multiple watches

In my case, it would most likely be a Rolex diver. If I really boil it down, they really do suit my casual, laid back style to a T. Probably the very best go anywhere, do anything reference (for me) and one I can see fitting in with my style best (even though I can’t swim)

I've only owned 2 Rolexes in my lifetime, an Explorer II (Sold it..bad Idea) and my current BLNR. Out of the two, I wore the Explorer II over the BLNR most of the time. I would have to say I liked my Explorer better as it fit my lifestyle better then the BLNR. Don't get me wrong, I love my BLNR but it's more flashy then the more subtle the Explorer II. So I say for me an Explorer. Hopefully in the future I can get another.

If I could pick any Rolex it would be a 116500LN black dial Daytona. If I had to pick 1 from my collection it would be my Hulk.

Not for work; I retired in 2003.

Basically, there are two applications I use either daily or very frequently.

1) I've been an active licensed ham radio operator since 1955, and all of my 2-way contact transmissions are logged in GMT as I have conversations with people all over the world, so we all use GMT to avoid confusion.

2) I'm an active FAA certificated pilot and flight planning involves checking aviation weather forecasts (TAFs and METARs), notices to airmen (NOTAMs), and temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) along my route of flight. All of these are posted with times in GMT.

I actually changed my mind, I don't know what I was thinking in my previous post. If I could only have one watch for the rest of my life it would be the 38mm Hamilton automatic field watch that my mom gave to me a long time ago. To me it's more valuable than a Richard Mille or a Newman Daytona.

I can feel the weight on my wrist reminding me it's something special, but the weight is unnoticeable unless I think about it. Blue is my favorite color and it's a pretty good blue. It's extravagant but doesn't look extravagant. It's durable enough to wear every day. It's accurate as hell. Looks awesome with jeans/shorts and the rarely worn suit (to me). The perfect One Watch. To me.

Can’t argue that! A beauty

For me, it would have to be my black dial Daytona:

Very tough though, especially going up against my Pepsi, but I can’t imagine letting this one go. Everything about it works for me.

As for Rolex, I own a hulk and always wanted a pepsi gmt next but if I wanted to have just one watch it would be because I wanted my watch to be a companion that went everywhere on my wrist and thus it would have to be a no-date sub.

I've thought a lot about this, actually.

I've got it narrowed down to the EXP2 (still working on which dial lol) or the SD43. Maybe one day, I'll try a similar experiment...

The experiment was temporarily put on hold I got the watch out of the safe and realised it no longer fits me .. I’ve had to order another link for it, possibly two,

They cost £460 each I had to bite the bullet so waiting for them to come in.

I consider myself a one watch guy and my only choice would be the watch I already have; the 16710 GMT Master II. It's the most versatile watch with the GMT function and by swapping the bezels (I have all three, black, Pepsi and the original Coke) it's like having three different watches.

Ouch. That is unfortunate, to say the least.

Oh well, you can probably scrape up another watch or two to last you in the meantime.

In all seriousness, good luck with the experiment, and I'll be following along, whenever it does happen.

Same for me, probably a Subc and probably the LVc as I would have other brands so can be a bit more flamboyant with it, but if I had no other watches then I might opt for RG Choco DD40, it's a gorgeous piece... just like I am I guess.

214270 Explorer 1 no question.

The explorer is the perfect watch.

[QUOTE=IamJacky;11731121]For me it's my 116710BLNR. I have friends/family/clients in different timezones so the GMT function is definitely very useful. Love the black/blue bezel with Oyster bracelet in that it's quite subtle yet elegant and sporty at the same time. The 40mm case sits quite well on my 6 1/2" wrist. For me it's just a very well rounded, versatile piece. [QUOTE]

BINGO! Similar rationale. 116710LN, though. Selected the all-black route. 6.75” wrist. I have the Sky Dweller Blue; 42 mm fits, but not optimal size. And, the Polar Explorer II also with same 42mm with fixed GMT bezel.

Sub Date for me. Currently on the waiting list as I sold my last one.

I've decided this as follows...

I really like the clasp because of the glide lock and because of the security flip lock or whatever it's called.

I used to love a Datejust, but now, I notice that I like fidgeting with my watches, and with a. Datejust you can't do anything other than look at it.

With a Sub, or Chrono, or GMT, I could mess with the bezel or pushers.

I don't like the GMT because I don't travel...

I love my Speedy, but I miss the date...

I have recently gotten into lap swimming, and it sucks that I can't wear my nice watch swimming.

So...

I've made up my mind.

It was a mistake selling my Sub Date and I need another one.

My AD told me yesterday that he can get me one if I wait 6 months.

Im going to do that.

If that doesn't work, I'll buy it grey dealer.

I never thought I'd cave into the grey market, but life is too short.

Probably my Sub, No Date

It's traditional
It's simple
It likes swimming
It's "robust"
It's adaptable
