My bad I didn’t see the 20k budget. Yes even in these dark days it isn’t happening at 20k but it is a very underrated dress watch

Cheers and nice watch.

As for the poster who showed the 36 mm Railmaster, that’s a very nice piece but not for a suit with tie.
Good plan. I greatly enjoy this watch and think you will too.

126234 datejust with a silver dial and jubilee bracelet. The slimmer lugs make it a little dressier than the older 116234 and the silver dial is less contrasting than a black sub with typical white and light blue dress shirts. The silver dial also looks great on a brown leather band depending on how much you like to coordinate and the color shoes/belt you wear.

Another vote for the Calatrava. A Patrimony at a push.

Lange 1815 owner here - and a happy one at that.

I personally would not wear my sub or GMT with black tie. Ever. But I do wear both with suits. And because a lot of time I spend in suits is in different time zones (travel for work) I have usually wound up wearing my GMT on business trips when I thought I’d wear my Lange.

While I’m happy with my Lange purchase - a true keeper - I do ask myself if I would have made the same purchase had I known that in advance how often I’d actually be wearing it. Maybe a used JLC would be better value and also interesting.

All that said....it’s pretty awesome rocking a watch like that with a tux.

Steel Omega Trésor Co-Axial. At 40mm, some my find it a touch large for a true dress watch, but it's certainly worth considering.

For a watch that isn’t going to get that much use, I recommend going vintage.

Cheap as chips and classic dress watch size.

if you are into vintage, omega constellation line would be a nice choice of budget

I am still deciding which Calatrava (5196 vs 5227) to purchase and the thing holding me back is how much time I’ll actually wear it.

I have several sport Rolex: GMT, SD4K, Daytonas. Plus some a Grand Seiko’s.

I really like the Patek 5196 so my wife bought me a Nomos Orion 386 which is very similar in look and size. Yes I know it’s not a Patek.
But, what I found out is that I don’t really wear watches on straps. It’s always hot in Texas. Plus now that I wash my hands 50 times a day it’s better not to wear a strap.

My point is, don’t spend $15-20k on a dress watch unless you’re going to wear it a lot.

A little surprised with no mentions for IWC. Awesome exhibition back, lovely lines. I have the 7 day and wear it with my suit regularly. Their Portofino line is beautiful.

Those are my general suggestions.exceptions can be made but a good starting point.

As others have mentioned JLC has many Interesting offerings. The resale is typically poor.
Patek Calatrava are nice but uninspiring and their manual Calatrava movements desperately need updating imho.
Cartier has options worth considering, resale also weak.

Lots of vintage options, you don’t have to spend a lot to get a fantastic looking timeless watch... the biggest obstacle here is your wrist size as many of the older watches are 36mm. Great size for a dress watch provided your wrists are not massive.

Remember a similar size dress watch wears bigger than a sports watch because there is more dial real estate.

Excellent advice! I also don’t like complications on a dress watch so no date and no subdials. A second hand is ok to me.

JLC has some amazing dress watches. I wanted something larger than traditional and love my Zenith Elite 6150 bought new for a great price, also didn’t want gold as I don’t wear it much at all. Even wearing suits all week I don’t need a true dress watch.

I would probably get a a preowned JLC Ultra Thin in White Gold in your price range. There is a beauty on Chrono24.

My dress watch *was* a Reverso tribute in rouge (my avatar). It just got basically zero wrist time. I think I wore it five times in the eight years I owned it.
Lovely piece though and a really good choice for a dress watch. Thin and great proportions.

One of my all time favorites that I have no worn in a long time. In a different league than most of the other watches mentioned, but very good value for the money and one of the best looking dress watches in my collection.

My thoughts are colored by the fact that I don't like traditional dress watches, but it appears that a lot of suggestions in this thread aren't adhering to the traditional dress watch format. I haven't seen it mentioned, but I would give a look at Glashutte Original, either their Senator lineup or Panoreserve.

Why not have a look at NOMOS watches from Glashütte in Germany? Beautifully clean, elegant design on most of their models (Tangente, Orion etc.) and very high quality...and apart from the Lambda series they don't break the bank! And they're readily available, and NOMOS has an excellent reputation for customer service

Honestly if you can afford it, get the Patek. If you want to lower the budget go with a JLC Reverso

When one can wear shorts and polo shirts to religious services and you no longer need to dress up to visit your mortgage officer, then of course a DJ or Submariner would be considered as a dress watch. The definition has changed with the times. Doesnt mean I have to adhere to it. Wear what you want, I say.
