I'll confess to being weaned on rap music. Run DMC and Beasties in Jr. High, NWA, Eazy E, BDP, 2Short, PE, etc. through High School, and on into all that followed in College, such as Digital Underground, Ice Cube, Outkast, Cypress Hill (do they count?, lol) -- I guess by then the genres started mixing. It's a great genre, I love it, and I love listening to it. Jay-Z is a great rapper, period full stop. His music has truth, and truth is the urstoff of good music, since times untold.

"Jay-Z x Kanye West To Auction 'Otis' Maybach"
Quote:
Jay-Z and Kanye West released the video for “Otis” from their collaborative album “Watch The Throne” this week. In a symbolic gesture, a Maybach is burned on camera, begging the question — opulent art installation or senseless destruction? The internet is buzzing with debate. The video, directed by Spike Jonze, premiered on MTV, with the announcement that the car would be auctioned to benefit a charity in the eastern Horn of Africa. The auction definitely tips the karma scales back in the duo’s favor after destroying a car that retails for $280,000. Article here Haha, the destroyed Maybach will probably fetch a higher price than a normal one |

Been listening to the album for quite a while now. Most songs are great. There's at least one more song in which he sings about Rollies (track 3, "Ni**as in Paris").
Lyrics are: Got a broke clock.... Rollies that don't tick tok. Audemars that's losing time.... Hidden behind all these big rocks. |

I am loving this album. The whole thing is great, one you can just listen straight through. I was big Kanye fan, then I found him to be a blowhard -- one of those sad people you run into who talk about how smart they are when everyone around them knows they're an imbecile. The Taylor Swift thing only made it more of a joke.
But Jay-Z is a perennial great, and seeing the two together I had to pick it up. No regrets, it's a good listen. As for the Maybach, I can't think of any better use for an overpriced over-blinged auto than to have a former Brooklyn drug pusher and a Chi-town teacher's kid drop-out half-wit turn it into a metaphor for the ignorant stupidity that is wealth, luxury buying, marketing, and all other things slightly rap-related. And if it fetches higher price than a perfect one, then kudos to whoever has too much money to shit out for realizing real ironic value. |

I don't have anything against rap or the lifestyle portrayed by its lyrics and videos. Live and let live. However, that lifestyle does not mix with the lifestyle of the typical Rolex wearer, nor does it mix with the lifestyle behind the image Rolex-the-company tries to project. Based on the foregoing, it think it is not unreasonable to say that rap/rolex = oil/water. |
