Every Yes or No poll should also contain an "I don't care" option.

My AD used Batman and Bruiser to describe my BLNR. I prefer Bruiser and think the nicknames, while not always perfectly tied to the timepiece, are fun.

Silly Nicknames for Rolex Watches

I call mine the "I'm better than anyone with a Timex" watch.

Jk

Actually let the forum mine is either the BLNR cousin or the Law Enforcement Special Edition.

A learned contributor pointed out to me soon after I started posting that TRF is like a swimming pool, there's a deep end and a shallow end.
No need to ask how I view nicknames then and don't get me started on Submariner, Submariner Date, Submariner, Submariner Date, Submariner.....

What I dislike as much as these (insider) nick-names are the other acronyms and number sequences when referring to a particular watch.

It's like some secret society where we have to study part numbers to be cool....or know some secret hand-shake to get in.

I've been wearing Rolex Watches for almost 4 decades....and have purchased only a handful in that time including one for my wife.
I still simply refer to them as "Submariner", Explorer-II, Date-Just, etc....

I also like, or am so obsessed with a particular watch that I almost NEVER switch up one for another.....year after year....(one stays on the winding box full-time)

So recently I bought a new Explorer-II-42mm in White Dial.....
I like it so much I'll probably buy a duplicate.....or maybe a duplicate with a Black-Dial....

I'm giving my older Submariner and 40mm Explorer-II to my twin daughters but having them re-done at Rolex first.

(I apologize in advance for the use of plain English)

The ones referencing fictional characters characters make me cringe. Especially since they don't make any sense.

A watch called the hulk wouldn't be 40mm. Kermit isn't green and black. Batman isn't blue and black.

Feels like people just grasping onto whatever is popular and mainstream without any real knowledge or understanding of those things.

Doesn't take much effort to remember the model names or even the model numbers. Especially if you consider yourself someone who cares about more than a status symbol.

Agree with all of your comments except for "rootbeer" That one is acceptable to me, in line with Pepsi or Coke for the GMT's

Although not a lover of nicknames per se, a few I can tolerate (Coke, Pepsi & Root Beer work IMO) the rest I feel are cringeworthy, but hey, each to their own.
However, Sub No date and Explorer 1 really get my goat (I own both) - I always use the exact Rolex name for both: Submariner and Explorer.
Likewise my Submariner LV is an LV or 50th Anniversary Model NOT a soppy frog muppet.

Rolex called it the 'Explorer I' in the manual that came with the Explorer and Explorer II.

Ooh! You learn something every day

Maybe for the 214270 they dropped the "I". Never mind...

My owner's manual for my 2013 Explorer (just the 214270 is in it, no Explorer II) says Explorer. There is no Explorer I anywhere in the text, on the website or in the press materials. I have never seen it anywhere in an official Rolex publication in the US. Nor is there any mention of a DateJust I, or Yachtmaster I. That' just the US, though. I think should be noted that if you say Explorer I or DateJust I people do know exactly what watch you're talking about, no question. It just further separates it from the II series. Also, Rolex has definitely changes their minds in what they say in their own literature from time to time.

Cheers Adam, it's been quite some time (pardon the pun) since I last looked at the manuals! well spotted.
I was though, referring to the legend on the respective dials...

I've never really understood the ire directed at Sub No Date, especially since "No Date" is merely descriptive and not cutesy (like "Batman"or "Root Beer"). I get that it's the icon and the first and every other one is a variation off it. Yet the subs are all generically subs, and to say No Date unambiguously defines it.

I own the 114060 and the 11613LB. To me it's a little weird to say, "I own two subs. One is the sub and one is the blue sub." As opposed to "I own two subs: one is the no date and one is the Bluesy." (I do like the latter, not cutesy in my book.)

Yes, it's all much ado about nothing, but fun on a Friday morning.

It's absurd to spend thousands of dollars on a watch, so I find the nicknames to be perfectly appropriate. It's good to know the numbers, though. Avoids confusion, which is also important when spending thousands of dollars on a watch.

Smurf was a good one, looked up pictures to see what people meant. Then did research on the various blue dials. Like someone said, it's helps make learning fun!

I like both!
It's true I know more people talking about a model using the reference number than the nickname.

I think a lot of times the question isn't if someone likes nicknames, but if they like any particular nickname. It seems to me when somebody on the forum points out they don't like them it is usually one of the more childish names like Batman or Hulk or Smurf. Rarely does someone dislike Pepsi or Coke (although I'm sure many will chime in and say they dislike all of them).

What is it about Hulk or Kermit or whatever that makes people cringe? I hate to say it, but one theory that pops in my head is that those types of nicknames take away from the "class" or "prestige" that some people bestow upon Rolex, and thus, themselves for owning said Rolex.

As far as I'm concerned, I may not like all the nicknames, but I don't mind people using them to reference whatever reference. I kind of like that the nicknames take some of the snobbery out of the brand.

My wife and I were at a car dealership buying a new vehicle. I was wearing my LVc.
The sales manager came over to us to complete paperwork and he noticed my watch and said hey nice Hulk!! Surprised the heck out of me. So there are obviously non WIS who are aware of certain Rolex models and their nicknames. Might as well accept and enjoy it.
