I would wear it unles you are worried about damaging it it and you don't want to be hurt yourself protecting your watch. If so, a G-Shock is a better option.

Before Rolex became the "look at me - I have arrived symbol"
it used to be the watch of all sports activity - You might say it still is today
...but...somehow I feel owners who have spend $30.000 (?) I doubt they would
expose the "investment" to the elements and life in the wild...maybe a brasserie
in Manhattan or Rodeo drive.

I would wear it and give no concerns about what anyone might think. The only reason not to would be because of fear of damage in which case I'd take the trusty Gshock.

They are tool watches. Use it as such. There is the old Bear Grylls compass trick that I forget, but it can't hurt to bring it.

Seeing as how I am from NY and the last time I was visited the mountains I didn't have rolex im not sure. Depends on what kind of activities i'll be doing, where i'll be staying, and so forth.

Im sure that both my DJ and my Explorer could withstand the circumstances but it is just a matter of if I would feel comfortable.

Yes. My watches accompany me in the field, hiking, swimming, camping, in the woods, etc. etc. Only ones that don't see field duty are the ones with less than 100m water resistance.

Dangerous to some, but I always wear my Rolex when in the Black Country as most of my clients are in and around Birmingham.

This one climbed Everest with Sir Edmond Hillary before Explorer was even thought of as a model.

I think it's more about the distraction of worrying... similar to parking in the city. It's nice to have a beater. I picked up a nice luminox on amazon for 200 bucks for those activities. If it gets ruined, I won't get heartbroken, so I don't worry about smashing or losing it.

I have a decent collection, including a Polar Explorer II, which conjures up images of Sir Edmund Hillary (or good advertising, as it may be), yet I still have mixed feelings about taking it with me on my JMT hike this year (2017).

It's not just about the durability of the watch, of which I have no doubt, but also about the practicality and also what others on the trail (who are very liberal, anti-materialistic and ultra-light weight conscious) think about it..

As you can tell by my screen name Im from the east coast (Jersey) near NYC, but I'm a born Californian and last year (2016) lived in Bay area for three months and spent many weeks in the mountains - Shasta, Lassen, Tahoe, Yosemite, Ansel Adams Wilderness And a Mount Whitney Day Hike Summit...

... with no watch... checked the time on my iphone...

What do do you think? useless, extra weight.... or hell yeah, take it to the top of Whitney this time!
Not with a white cashmere sweater.

In the 'real' back country......more than 12 hrs from my truck or a road, I always have an automatic watch, and high quality compass. Not anything that needs batteries or depends on a signal or satellite.

Call me old fashioned, but time, distance, and direction are pretty important to me when I'm out there quite a way.

I'd take it everywhere, especially since that's what it was made for.

Whether liberal or conservative, materialistic or not, jealousy is jealousy and admiration is admiration.

When I see someone using a Rolex as a true tool, I see them as someone who doesn't mind investing money into their passions (which no one can put a price on anyway).

I’m a liberal. I own a Rolex and lots of guns. Go figure...

I might wear my Explorer or my Casio ProTrek, simply because it has a compass, barometer, altimeter, which are kinda useful....would greatly depend on how far I was planning going off trail...

I think that why would someone with for example Explorer II go to mountains without it. I always have Explorer II with me when going to mountains. It would feel stupid not to take it.

Why not, it's what the original intent of the piece was anyway. And as said above, looked good on Messner's wrist. Why would it not on yours.

Picked up one of my watches from service at Beyer the other day and he showed me this piece, was quite amazing to have it right there and think where it had been.

Not Whitney, Mt. Tallac. Check the left wrist.
