Err....is it just me, or is that plain silly. 99% of watch users would be barely aware of their existence.

We don't care who is aware of their existence or not. The Rolex Submariner without date magnifier corresponds to the original model of 1954. It is among the best known, most popular, most imitated and most counterfeit watches in the world. 99% might not be aware of that, but 99% are wearing, without knowing it, a copy or a Sub wannabe.
I do hope that I made my point clearer, I don't want to sound silly, do I .
Cheers.

Is having a Sub and a Speedmaster too basic?

The only way these are too basic is if you plan to spend a lot of time with watch snobs who will look down on anything but watches made by the "Big 3" or something like that. Almost anyone on this forum, or similar forums will appreciate them as a great foundation for a watch collection, you'll enjoy a great rotation. The general public won't notice at all. I have no one ever mention my watches. Don't wear them for others, they don't care, do it for yourself.

Which three are considered the "Big 3?" Serious question. Patek, Breguet, ... AP? Thanks, c

I don't think you could go wrong with these actually.
The Sub No-Date would set you apart, I have seen only one in the wild other than mine - and I have only seen one speedy in the wild.
Not basic at all - awesome watches.

The Sub and the Speedmaster are not as common in the real world as some people claim. They may be common around watch enthusiast circles and there are reasons for that. One being that they are both great, time tested, and iconic pieces.
Common does not have to carry a negative connotation in my opinion. I can think of a few other common items that I have that bring me value, comfort, and pleasure.

Are Levi's 501s common? Absolutely and they are still great
