Have a nice time on your vacation

I once spent a weekend rock climbing and generally banging around a 'luxury' diver all without a scratch. Then I dropped on the locker room floor when i was changing and it left a big dent on the side of the case. If I had left it on when I showered it would have been safer!

It's a well worn battle scar and I tell people I banged it up rock climbing, which it true in a general sense if you include showering after rock climbing as part of rock climbing (-;

I didn't quite wearing a Rolex in the shower due to the heat. It was soap scum in the clasp that stopped me.

I always wear either my Exp 39mm or SubC in the shower but always hold my arm out of the water stream.
Sure it gets splashed, but as I understand Rolex have test boiled watches for 10 minutes or so, don't think it's a problem!

So, is Bob's not a good place for information?

Please enlighten me as I was considering buying my first Rolex from there. I am a newb to this depth of the Rolex world. I just discovered this forum a few days ago and registered today.

Thank you for any information you may have.

. . .
I won't comment on their watches, you can check our Buyers and Sellers Boards for that.

As to their "information", I think that they do a lot of cut and paste without researching hard facts or technical specs, such as the article cited here-in.

Fair enough.

Thank you for your reply. I am new here and trying to educate myself and learn all of the intricacies of the Rolex world so my knowledge base is just beginning at this point.

I've worn mine is the shower.......hot tub.......Atlantic Ocean.........and when washing dishes.

If I intended to do anything else I would have bought gold bars and kept them in my safe.

Seeing this thread has been resurrected from 2009 afraid just like the many Rolex myths on the net many just talk below especially the one in your link, at one time Rolex used to advertise that they boiled a Rolex oyster in water.

On the other hand, if you put your wrist in water, the watch will rapidly attain water temperature. Secondly, the problem is not just the heat but the rate at which heat is transferred. As usual, a sudden small change is worse than a very gradual large change, so the thermal shock could produce damage.

Despite this, your conclusions are all correct :).

Have you ever worn a watch or a ring in a sauna? I can guarantee you that the metal will attain temperatures significantly higher than the water in a hot a hot tub or shower.

Also, outside on a hot sunny day you are not just faced with heat transfer from the air. You are seeing the infrared radiation from the sun exciting the molecules creating heat in the metal (or whatever material is exposed to the sunlight)

Anyway, I still cannot believe some people think that the water or water vapour in a shower can somehow damage the seals in these watches.

ps - Viton and Nitrile rubber (which I believe Rolex uses) are good for approximately 200 degrees C and 120 degrees C respectively. Getting them super cold (below -20 degrees C is more likely to cause a problem)

pps - There's a very good reason they make protective gloves from nitrile - they are extremely resistant to solvents and chemicals.

Cooling things down a bit....

In addition to this is... the other end of the spectrum I saw recently on the RWF a Submariner still functioning in a block of ice, Quality!

As I said eight years ago the Royal Navy rules mention this subject:
https://www.rolexforums.com/showpost...9&postcount=35

But I don't think anyone bothered to read them then either

You can shower with a Rolex but why do it unless your in a place where the watch can get stolen while your in the shower. Just builds up soap scum. Makes no sense to me.

Don't you rinse the soap off your body in the shower ?

I would not take the watch off in the gym locker room as the floor is hard tiled. One drop and that could be it. Not worth the risk
Also, would never ever leave in the locker. Bolt cutters are easy to conceal in a gym bag.
