How long ago were "the good ol' days?"

Taken in May 2018, The one missing piece is the Sub C ND that I just purchased as a walk in customer. Those were the days!

I agree with most of the comments here. 3-4 years ago watches were still readily available.

5-7 years ago - they were available - with a discount.

Given my conversations with ADs, most said it’s due to Chinese customers buying them up

Since production maintained somewhat consistent they never got around to really restock inventory, hence now the drip drip shipping/list creating which leads ADs to more precisely allocate pieces to keep customers happy rather than keeping the shop front full of what’s actually available

As for prices, the price increases have always been there, tried on a DD WG back in the days msrp 19k, thought it looked too much on me, I was really young and went for a DJ instead

Same for a lady DJ I bought as a present, it is now double the msrp and I got with a discount, that was less than a decade ago

3 years ago my AD had both BLNR and LVC in the display cases together. They were for sale slightly under msrp. I turned the AD down. I went to DavidSW and purchased a new LVC well below msrp.

I would bet all this Newbie hate toward grey market dealers would pass if they only could remember only 4 years ago when our trusted sellers sold well below their beloved AD’s. Then the frugal deal searchers laughed at those chumps that paid too much at their AD’s instead of saving money for the same new Rolex from our trusted sellers.
So much truth here. It wasn't that long ago that going gray was wildly encouraged here and the concept of "building an AD relationship" was laughable by most.

I would also say that people bought what they actually wanted and what was perceived as hard to get was not so much a factor in people's purchases.

For me, as far back as 2014, which is when I walked into my AD and came out with a SS SubC Date.

I can't think of any other country that had any significant change to their market before Jun 2016, but after Brexit, country after country went the way of the UK.
Bruv, the effects of Brexit on the rest of Europe are a reality. But the overwhelming effects are yet to be felt. (Most of the current issues and economic slowdowns are chiefly affecting the Bri'ish market only).

That's because the "transition period" negotiated by Treeza is still cushionning the soon-to-depart UK. Till the end of this year you're still in the Single Market, so it's basically business as usual.

The real hit will start to be felt this summer when the UK is expected to renounce its right to ask for an extension of the transition period, and then in December when you'll be completely out. By then you'll have negotiated a necessarily sub-optimal trade agreement, but the degree of financial uneasiness will depend on how bad that agreement is.

I'm not predicting a market meltdown nor a chain reaction, though from various points of view including that of getting a Rolex, this would be desirable.

Except that you're supposed to declare your high value purchase upon landing back on Blighty and then pay the local VAT.

If it's anything like on my side on the pond and the rules won't be subsequently changed, that is.

Four or 5 years ago, BLNRs sat on the for sale section at $7900 with multiple bumps and even a few price drops. Explorer 2 polars 16570 went for $4300 at John Cristicello's Alltiques.

I walked into the Rolex branded store in Columbus Circle (NYC) in 2009 and they had everything. I was thinking about grabbing a new SS Sub for like $6k but thought it was too expensive. Truth is, I was probably right! But now of course I see it a little different.

I remember walking into the Rolex Boutique in Waikiki in 2015. I asked about a 116520 for my wife. They brought 2 (black and white dial) for us to look at. Another customer asked about the same and they brought 2 from the back for him to look at. I wondered if they only had the 4 or if they actually had more in the safe...

That pic is from January 2017. Right before the drought kicked in.

In 2016 and prior discounts were mandatory. Salespeople would immediately offer juicy discounts on subs before you could even finish saying hello.

Well to put in perspective in 2016 I picked up this green tag Daytona for a discount once the 116500 was announced and also the same year this Sub where my AD gave me a nice wolf watch winder just to thank me for my business

Thank you

It’s a keeper but if I ever change my mind will let you know for sure. I’m a big fan of the modern Daytona without the ceramic bezel. So classic like an Exp2 with steel bezel. One day I’ll probably pick up a black 116500 to pair with it.
