I have my watch (explorer II) insured through the Hartford (via AARP). They even include "mysterious disappearance". This means if you just misplaced it still covered. Check with your insurance carrier. You may have similar coverage.

It's the same here in Finland, if I would report my watch stolen, and perhaps even know who did it, even if the person would get my watch back to me, I wouldn't be able to cancel the report, but it would go under "general prosecution". State VS the defendant.

It is a bit harsh but you also have to wonder why we have so much crime in some of these countries.

Sure, but chopping off arms is not the solution, the "choppers" subject them selves lower than the scum...

Still, let's all hope this has a happy ending.

I am so sorry to hear this sad tale. The perpetrators are getting off easy IMHO. Theft is theft and these are adults now they should be responsible for their actions.

"Just a watch" is NO excuse. What will they steal next if there is no consequence to their actions?

This is why I have all my watches insured with Jewelers Mutual. It gives me real peace of mind.

I hope it works out as best as possible. =) maverick

Thats admirable of you to allow your friend's family time to sort this out without involving the police, but just don't let it get drawn out too long you still are the victim. At some point you might just have to bite the bullet with more and more people getting involved.

Someone entered your dwelling and commited a theft from inside. You should file something right now. If the detectives get this info, they could crack them like an egg. If you have no report, it's like it never happened.

Have the names, and serial number ready to give the police. Children may panick, and get rid of the watch. If they still have it, they will race to give it back. It's not your fault that the watch was stolen. My second concern is other things missing from the house. You may find something gone in 3 months that you haven't thought of yet. I'd be prepared to handle business for myself first, and the friendship will be fine. Your not blaming your friend, but those other clowns took your stuff! Like I said. No report, It didn't happen!
That sounds like a good plan, and maybe it works if your a police officer. We had Christmas gifts stolen out of our car in the drive way. The neighbor's kid said he knew the boys who stole the gifts and gave me their address. We had to plead with the cops to take any action. They gave a big song and dance how "you just have not given us enough evidence". Eventually, I said that if they would take no action, I would go make an attempt to get the gifts myself. It was only after making a big stink that the Lakeland police bothered to go to the perps house and confront the suspects. We got most of the gifts back. But, the police used every excuse in the world not to simply do the obvious. Of course, even once an arrest was made, the state attorney never bothered to contact us and what should have been grand theft was simply another day in the neighborhood.

I hope your able to get the police interested, but if they could care less---and direct you to your home owners policy, do not be surprised.

My grandparents house was broken into 18yrs ago and the thief's stole 200,000 in cash, jewelry, guns, and all kinds of other stuff. They caught the tool bags and recovered over half but the kicker is the grandma has a store in town and was selling some of the unrecovered merchandise..... Nothing further was ever done.

Hopefully tomorrow will be better than you expect.

I am a professional at opening a safe. That safe would take me 15 minutes without damage done to the dial if I had to drill using a 1/8" drill bit to open it. I can open that wihout drilling the safe also.

http://www.safetrends.com

The worst case for me to open a average safe is 45 minutes.

The money chests are more involved. I can side scope a safe in some cases without touching the front of the safe.
I just got through opening a 1930 safe with out any reference photographs just by thinking the problem out and where to drill. Once I figured out what place I wanted to drill the only worry was damage to the lock and that did not happen. I drilled into the lock in a excellent location saving all of the lock and hardware without damage to the safe. I also saved the dial and ring. Looking at the photographs you can see the lock and its parts are in excellent condition. I serviced the safe and the customer was happy.

This is what I do for a living only safe and vault work. I am only a handful in the world to micro drill safe open when possible and do it without anyone knowing what happened. The reason for micro drilling is the safe is not damaged where it needs new parts including the dial. My secret is drilling a 1/8" hole in a safe which has in the past cleared ball bearing hard plate going between the balls and giving me a clear scope view with my 1/8" scope. It is an art which I am very proud to have developed.

Sorry for being long winded, however when someone says blow it up I have seen a safe blown up by UDT (for fun and games) and it is not a pretty sight. The only reason why UDT blows thing up is for destruction or breaching something and you do not want to be near by when that happens. A class 5 GSA container will not be breached just by blowing it up. It is designed to withstand that, the reason Class 5 GSA containers are made for ammo and guns. It will at the most pregnate out board but that is it.

The photographs of the 1930 safe I opened I have more if you are interested:

I'm so sorry to hear about that. I agree it should be reported to the police.

Years ago, my in-laws let a teenage niece stay with them. While they were away one evening, she had some friends come over to socialize. Much later it was discovered that miscellaneous watches and jewelry, including a custom gold ring and a nice Cartier watch, were stolen. They never reported it to the police, but they probably should have.
