Definition of social media

: forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

I suspect there are a lot of people, that think, just wearing a Rolex, is flexing. Or, 'showing-off', as we say in English.

How do you define social?

seeking or enjoying the companionship of others; friendly; sociable; gregarious. of, relating to, connected with, or suited to polite or fashionable society: a social event. living or disposed to live in companionship with others or in a community, rather than in isolation:

Despite the buzzwords staring at a screen is not social.

Thank you!

We are all engaging socially here. The best part of TRF is that social behaviors here are a matured crowd. And abide by acceptable social standards….

Yes but it doesn't come naturally. As a crowd we're not more or less mature than other forum members out there or social media users. Some of us are mature of course and I'm sure of that, but if not for the strong moderation we have here this place would be a mess.

There's like, ya know, no way TRF is social media. It's like, no one posts Tic-Toc videos, or, like... pftpft there's no 'like' button, ya know what I mean. So, yeah, TRF is soooo different, like duh.

At the risk of virtue signalling, I can state that I sometimes (infrequently) post watch pics on watch forums where I'm anonymous, but I would never post watch pics on my instagram because honestly, I'm sure my friends and the people that follow me would think I'm being jerk and a braggart.

On the flip side, I appreciate when people share their stuff, either anonymously or not. In fact, I find it far more interesting when it's not anonymous. My distaste for "flexing" my own stuff comes from my personal circumstances (location, upbringing, social circle, etc).

If it's anonymous, is it really a flex?

Yes, it’s annoying. Buy your watch, wear it, enjoy it, and be humble.

I don't get it. We're all (almost) anonymous here anyway, so there's no point to flex. For me the idea of flex is showing off to someone you know personally. Flexing to someone you don't know is like showing off to thin air.

FTX I,

Notice I used "matured" not "mature", as in a group that is familiar or experienced using and communicating socially on a forum. Do we not all abide by social standards here?

ALL Forums are social media!

I don't mind watch pictures but wording is key. I get really annoyed with posts that put the word humble next to a full PM or series of full PM pieces!

I think you underestimate the draw of social media. AND flexing is merely the act of showing off. People in real life do it all the time to people they don't know.

AND if social media is just thin air to people why do they get into massive fights, threaten, get emotional so they have to leave sites because they couldn't control themselves. Feel bad for things they said, or didn't say. Feel good for the number of "friends" or "likes they get.

Humans go to movies, watch TV, and get emotionally involved with stories all the time. Suspension of disbelief is an aspect of it. A lot is blatantly stupid but we still can't help ourselves and get involved.

We pick sides in stupid reality TV shows, we get outraged at so called news sites so much that we come back day after day to get outraged again. Facebook steers people down the rabbit hole with their algorithms.

Pretty much all these things are "virtual" and have no real bearing on our lives. And yet........

WE ARE NOT RATIONAL.

In fact sheep have started forming a union and hire legal representation so that they can disassociate themselves from humans. They are tired of being mentioned in the same sentence.

Social media or not I don't mind. All I'm saying is I'm a TRF member because this place has a diligent group of moderators enforcing the rules everyday otherwise I wouldn't waste my time coming here.

Good point. But that would require extra money and spending lol. But if they have a fancy car already, its at no cost.

Plus might feels awkward to show off their AP collection in trf i guess.

I mean, it’s a watch. I wear watches maybe 10 times per year total. The off topic forum is the crown jewel of this entire site, I think most of us realize that. I just don’t see what people can post about in the watch section of the site after a month or two as you will have seen every single topic that can be started in that timeframe and nothing new actually is talked about unless Basel is happening.

So yes I agree. However, a flex is when ones identity is known. Meaning I am not flexing to people who know me. I see posting pictures here as sharing with the community. Which is something a member recently did, share his travels while wearing his Sub (SS Oyster). And made me think I could share my own travels in the future and bring you all along with me.

I’m curious if that would be a good subforum.

Although- after years of being a member I’m just realizing that this forum has many layers then just the watch area, and the offtopic is the true crown jewel.

Cheers to that!

illusory correlation: the phenomenon of perceiving a relationship between variables (typically people, events, or behaviors) even when no such relationship exists.

I would classify TRF as old school social media. It is moderated.

Modern social media is not moderated and will serve you content that will keep you on as long as possible to serve you as many ads as possible. This promotes posting that provokes and generates many views and responses. If TRF was like this we would only see threads called "My Rolex and the elephant I shot in a national park" or "Is it OK to shower with my fully stickered watch?", the rest would be hidden.

Note that modern social media is censored, but so is basically anything online.

Please explain the difference between flexing and just taking a picture of ones watch. I don’t understand. Did I flex taking a picture with the steering wheel of my $450 BMW? Essentially it meets your standards of a picture of a Rolex in front of a steering wheel.

If someone doesn't notice my watch, I ask them to ask me the time. I don't class that as flexing, I'm just providing a free of charge service by ensuring they aren't late.
