A while ago we received a brand new watch (datejust 31) from an AD, the pallet fork rubies were positioned in such a way that it was physically impossible for it to run. And I mean impossible, not run a little bit or run bad, the pallet fork jammed everything.

That watch left the factory with that fault and I don't know how it could have passed any quality control check or accuracy tests...

That dial would bug me to no end! Sorry but that is very poor QC on the part of Rolex, especially with the kind of money people are paying nowadays for these watches!

Even FPJ and others have error dials at times. Very rare, yet these things do happen. Personally, i'd like an error dial just like coin enthusiasts collect errors too.

A thing is worth whatever a person is willing to pay for it. With sports cards (for example), some errors are deemed value-diminishing and others command enormous premiums. This watch, being a new model in its first year (right?) and being produced during a pandemic when all things are wonky... also 4:20 is a joke (that I appreciate), but it's also 4/20, which is basically when the pandemic truly went global... who knows? It sounds like at least some people here would consider it collectible; not everyone has to.

OP, if you do keep it as a future collectible, I'd say it could be worth asking the AD (who one could argue screwed up and owes you now!) to put something in writing certifying that they sold you this error dial (clearly described), including date of sale, serial, etc---some kind of additional provenance for you to keep with the paperwork. And as others have said, unless you want it "fixed," don't send it to RSC for service.

EDIT: Dumb as it sounds, I'd also print out this thread and keep it with the watch/papers as well. Years and years down the road, if you go to sell this, you'll be glad you did.

I'm just really curious about more of the background story of this. So did it come in the coffin or in a box? I'm interested in how it slipped through an AD unnoticed. Can you reveal the AD's company name by any chance? To me it would seem that it was never even peeked at by the AD. I'm glad they will replace it but if seems extremely lame that it got to you in the first place. I'm also curious as to what your final decision is wrt keeping or replacing it.

Must have been made on 4/20 and gone through QA at 4:20 as well. Someone was definitely smoking and stoned.

Keep it, it’s so cool. I would definitely do what others have said and get it certified by AD you bought it from that they sold it to you, they will be gutted they didn’t keep it.

YOU KEEP THIS WATCH!
As others have said, create a provenance paper trail a mile or two miles long.
You have a one of a kind Rolex, how amazing is that!

Quirkiness on dials such as 16520 inverted 6 I get but this just looks wrong.... you'd find yourself constantly having to explain to 99.9% of people that is rare. To me it just looks like a cheap knock off, sorry.

Thank you all for the thoughts and opinions. I reached out to the AD and am trying to get ahold of paperwork proving everything. I do have the receipt and all other papers and tags. I am leaning toward keeping it for a while and just seeing if I enjoy the error. Thanks

If true (I have have no reason to doubt), Rolex will be sending a global memo in the next few days for AD inventory inspections of all OPs.

epic, Love it, totally would keep the 4/20 dial. you'll never have the chance to get another one, however you will always be able to get a replacement dial. keep it, or flip it to someone and buy another new one xD

Epic, and without a doubt that should be the 'official' name of this error dial.

Some have asked how it passed QC. What about the sales associates at the store? So nobody noticed it? With that said, I’d keep it!!!!

I agreed until I read the “4:20 dial” comment.

True genius. That name will live on on par with “California dial” as a highly collectible Rolex if only for the name.

4:20 dial. Just, wow!

And remember guys, all dial markers are applied by hand. If the base for the double batons is the same as the base for single batons, it’s just human error.

4:20 dial. Again, wow, you just made this guy an extra $5k
