Love them, my new favourite watch.
I've ordered a new strap for mine, picking it up in a few days.

Resurrecting this thread to see how, if anything, has changed.

Is the 3940J still being worn and as popular?

I think this watch is a great value. It is the quintessential Patek. I have seen 3 of them sell quickly last week. Although they were platinum and white gold. Very collectible. The yellow gold pieces are slower to move and prices lower but extremely beautiful.

I absolutely love the reference but am biased. LOL! 3940 is such a classic as others have said and at 36mm it is so cool considering watches these days are typically 40+mm

Incredibly beautiful 3960. Amazing dial. What color is it? I have never seen one like that. Is it a special edition? It looks amazing with the strap and your sport coat.

Thanks for the kind words! It was a release from the London World Exhibition in 2015. Reference Number is 3940G-029 and they supposedly only made 5 of them. It came on a black strap with deployant but I currently have it on a Hodinkee Strap (have no affiliation to them and not plugging their products) but it helps dress the piece down IMO and makes it pretty versatile. Special Edition or Not I love the 3940 as the proportions are amazing and it is such a classic. Cant go wrong in any metal and I think they are undervalued.

Love the color. IMO, the 3940 and 5070 are the two references in which all metal / dial configurations really work

For all the attention that the nautilus, aquanaut, and pilot watches seem to garner, the 3940, IMO, is the true connoisseur's Patek.

To me it represents an era when Patek stood alone at the pinnacle of watchmaking. The 3940 is an incredible amalgamation of subtlety and substance.

No surprise it was the daily watch of Philippe Stern. Too small and stodgy for some, but just perfect for those that appreciate the finer things life has to offer!

Probably one of the last, of a few relatively modern, great Patek watches to date. I'd pass on anything over the last few years for something of this time of great Patek manufacturing. I feel bad that many of you modern guys really missed the fun back then.

The 3940 has quickly become a favorite of mine. It quietly and discreetly oozes Patek quality and design.

Can anyone compare the wrist presence of the 3940 to a 5196? Just trying to get an approximation of how it wears. Also was wondering if the dial color is the same for all metal variants?

Could I please have your thoughts on this piece (philippe stern wore the gold dial "dore" version for decades). Yes it is 36mm but I have a 6.75" wrist so it's ok in terms of size.

Thank you all.

Just adding to an old thread...

I could not be happier with mine and have posted last week about it. It is my new grail watch... I think I may need some strap color variation. I really like the way the brown one looks from photos others have posted.

Which series do you prefer for these 3940? there is a big price gap between the 1st and the other series and I am not sure it is justified?

Mine is a 3941J with an early 2nd series dial. I like the subdial symmetry without the cross divider on the leap year indicator.
