After reading this thread I was intrigued, I smelt different fragrances from Creed on a trip into Leeds at Harvey Nichols today and preferred Aventus, when I have used up my other cologne's I think I will buy a bottle.

A recipe recommended to me by a Creed representative is Himalaya under layer with Bois De Portugal over.

I'm going to tell you the secret.....if you want that barber shop smell.........

You don't need no Polo. You don't need no Calvin Klein. You don't need no Hugo.

All you need is an 8 dollar bottle of Pinaud aftershave from Walgreens splashed on the
back of your neck.

Been wearing Fahrenheit for years, among some others. Nothing I have worn in my life has gotten more compliments or queries from women of all ages. First bottle was a gift from my wife. I have been wearing it ever since. It is the only cologne that has remained in my collection since the first bottle.

It is my go to daily wearer.

I wear that stuff in the summer to work. Zero razor burn and it reminds me of my grandfathers barber shop when I was a kid

I'd been wanting to sample some Creed, but there's not a store within a few hundred miles that carries it. Thanks to the Decant Shop (and $38 on my Visa), I've got 3 samples coming...

Got my samples from Decant Shop a few days ago. Here are my impressions of the 3 Creeds I received. And these aren't top notes, heart notes, etc. Just impressions:

Silver Mountain Water: Kind of a dirty, earthy smell. My girlfriend likes it though - says it reminds her of Calvin Klein.

Green Irish Tweed: Very upscale. The second I sprayed it, it evoked a black tie affair and a dimly lit room. I like it, but not for the day.

Aventus: My favorite. Fruity, a little more feminine and softer. I like it for every day.

I'll definitely be getting some Aventus. Maybe some Irish Tweed for evenings. I will say this-I've never tried higher end colognes like this, but this is the first time a cologne has ever given me a 'feeling'. Not just what it smells like but deeper than that. Kind of weird...

I get my samples from The Décant Shop, The Perfumed Court, Surrender to Chance, and LuckyScent. I just found about Twisted Lili, which stocks a lot of niche brands.
DÉCANTShop
Perfume Samples, Perfume Decants, Indie Perfumes, Scents and Vintage Perfumes
Surrender to Chance - Perfume Samples & Fragrance Decants
LuckyScent: shop for hard to find perfumes, fragrances and candles.

The two best sites for research are Basenotes and Fragrantica. Keep in mind that they are free independent reviews of a very subjective topic by people of very varied experience. Your skin and your nose are unique. There are also a number of YouTube reviewers that post regular reviews of thousands of colognes.
Basenotes - independent online guide to 20,000+ fragrances, with articles, fragrance news, fragrance reviews and more...
Perfumes and Colognes Magazine, Perfume Reviews and Online Community—Fragrantica.com

I only buy the spray samples when available. You pay more for the larger volume, but I think the colognes can smell different when they are sprayed vs dabbed on. Also, with a 1.5-2ml spray bottle you get plenty of wearings before you have to commit to a bottle or not. If you love a cologne, but know you won't wear it often, you can buy a bigger decant (8-15 ml) for a fraction of the cost of a bottle.

Fragrances are art. (at least they can be ;) ) The best thing about this hobby is that you can invest a few hundred dollars on pre screened samples and try dozens of the best scents in the world and put together a collection of olfactory masterpieces that work best for you. What other hobby allows you to put together a serious collection the best of the best in the business for a couple thousand dollars? None. Maybe single malt whisky if you leave out the ultra high end stuff that seems to be marketed to collectors vs drinkers.

PS. The Doir Eau Noir is absolutely repusive with no redeeming qualities and sticks to you forever. 3 washes of the wrist, a shower, and 18 hours later and I could still detect it. Try at your own risk, and be light on the juice!
