Yachtmaster, the rich mans Submariner.

or

Submariner, the poor mans Yachtmaster.

I had a sub, now a Yachtmaster. Both great watches.

People bought Subs over YMs because the Subs were cheaper; now on the secondary market the tide has turned as YMs can be procured at an AD and Subs only with a history!!! Same with TT watches (like Daytona); used to be avoided because of cost but now they can be had cheaper!!!

Why is the Yacht-master so unpopular?

Just a bit blingy perhaps

I would bet my left nut the YM 40 is good for 300m as well. It has the trip lock. It’s all marketing.

I think your nuts are safe with the Yacht-Master. Indeed the triplock winding crown is good for 5,000m/16,400ft. It was developed for the Sea-Dweller originally and can be found in the Deepsea and Submariner too as we know. I'm pretty sure the case of the Yacht-Master could sustain a pressure of 300m/1000ft, if not more. Wondering if anyone knows the crushing depth of the case or the crystal?

I have been racing sailboats around the country/world for over 30 years and have seen exactly two in the wild on a racing sailboat/ at a yacht clubs. Most of the Rolexes I see on the water with the sailing crowd are Sub's and DJ's and an occasional Daytona. Maybe the new YM's are bigger with the motoryacht scene.

I have owned a Yachtmaster since 2004. She has gone for a £650 service with Goldsmiths at the moment and I miss her.
There is nothing wrong with the Yachtmaster.
In fact like people say it’s not a popular watch suits me. Less watches = better used value.

The sub was lagging 30 years ago and there was talk ym would replace it. They got cold feet and never found a following until now-ish. That plus a lot of people don’t have yachts

I think its popularity is definitely on the rise, as of late. It is certainly one of the most beautiful Rolex references I have ever worn!

YM line is a little odd in general. The original was the first Professional model that wasn’t really purpose-built (nothing special to the “sport” of yachting) while the YM II is the only one that’s truly purpose-specific (only regattas would use that type of Chronograph).

Not your typical Rolex. Not blingy by any stretch IMHO. Dressier than the purposeful and utilitarian looking Sub. Not trying to compete, it's in its own space. I bought a YM before a SD43 and a Sub (TT Bluesy). They all have their own personality and meaning in my collection.

The fact that I had to scroll through 6 pages of this thread before seeing a pic of the Rhodium/ Blue Seconds hand YM is disgusting.

How is this not considered one of the most beautiful SS models that can be had today??? It's gorgeous. It's easier to get than the other SS models and now with a smaller price delta between it and the others, it may get more popular.

I think people don't like the lack of instant equity compared to other models. I'm saving for this or a CHNR...whichever I can get.

I think even YM prices are on the up now. Maybe they are so photogenic that they look good on Instagram and that is pushing their popularity. I used to joke that they were the thinking man's Submariner.

I'd never buy a Yacht-master...because I'd never be able to choose between the slate and blue dial and can't afford both.

The twin/trip lock isn't the weak point, it's the case back. That's why the YM and GMT are both trip lock 100m and less chunky than the Sub. You may be correct that the YM can go 300m (I have no idea), but your reasoning behind it is not accurate.

Possibly because there are few masters of their yachts in the world anymore. Nice watch, terrible name.

You're right. Definitely should have gone with "Master-Boater" for this one.

There are several versions of this watch that I think look pretty good, but I also really dislike the Yacht Master name so it’s a no go for me.

It's a hybrid.

Is it a Sub trying to be a OP or is it an OP trying to be a Sub?

The original version actually had function in Yacht (Sail) racing.

I hear those who take offense with the Yacht Master name. But Submariner or Sky-Dweller aren't a lot better in my book.

Apparently over here the grey market price of a slate YM40 has increased 22% in the last 10 months.

because the bezel is a dirt magnet, prone to scratch and difficult to clean up.
