Seiko Baselworld

Who else is incredibly excited to see what seiko and Grand Seiko is gonna put out? I’m more excited for these guys than Rolex. I for one hope we get a diver from GS that surprises us. As in, it just comes out of left field. And for seiko I hope they do something else with the 6r35 movement that was in the Presage SJE073. What say you guys?

There’s apparently new spring drives with a 44.5 mm case. Not a fan of the size

Ugh, I’m hoping for smaller, thinner watches from GS

I’m in the same boat. With all of the Rolex nonsense Tudor and GS are the brands I’m watching the most right now. For those familiar with the YouTube channel Bark & Jack, Adrian has been consistently teasing that GS will be releasing some smaller watches at Basel this year. Apparently he knows someone.

I’d love a smaller dive watch. Would be all over that. And yes I’m as excited if not more than some of the more popular releases.

Well Rolex and Tudor releases don’t shock and awe, hopefully GS has some magic still at Baselworld ‘19.

Just remember, seiko release new releases basically every month of the year so Basel can be a bit of a let down sometimes, especially for their lower to mid tier stuff.

Same here. Grand Seiko is one or two "timeless" designs away from eating Rolex's lunch. They have the finishing, the dials, the heritage, the innovation, the quality. IMHO, their case designs, bracelets, and overall too-large sizes are not competitive (yet) with Rolex. If they could hire their very own Jonny Ive, they would be off the races in all markets.

Rolex's releases this year were a dog's breakfast and I think a large number of prospective buyers (or even longtime collectors) are ready to jump ship if only there was a strong competitor.

Very interested to see what they release this week and this year.

Just emptied my shoebox for a Rolex. I hope Seiko has nothing to offer this year. I already had an untainted alpinist.

I don’t know about jumping ship, but it seems like Rolex had very arrogant releases and people are getting tired of the waitlists and AD BS. An ascendant competitor in the $5-12K range would probably do everyone in the watch industry a favor. Let’s go Seiko!

I love GS, but they are a long way from eating anything Rolex has to offer. GS does NOT have a watch problem, they have a marketing problem. I don’t know if it is possible for GS to even get close to nipping at the heels of Rolex. They aren’t competing with Rolex. They are competing with an industry.

I will preface this by saying that I own two GS references and I really like them.

But they are not going to do a single thing to Rolex.

Not only does GS struggle with the marketing problem, but the quality is inconsistent on a base level.

I tried a SBGR055 over the weekend.

Wonderful dial. Perfectly polished. Bracelet was smooth and well finished.

Lots of time and effort on those...

But where is all fell apart was the crown...

Rolex crowns are perfect. They unscrew and screwdown with no effort or drama. Twin or Triplock, it doesn't matter. Smooth and they alway thread confidently and easily when screwing them back down..

The GS (and other GS I have tried) Not even close. They are gritty, hard to seat and feel like they are moments away from cross threading and stripping out...This SBGR055 was especially bad. Very fiddly. I'll pass on that.

The frustrating thing is that GS hyperfocuses on the finish of the dial, but ships the watch with a $hitty crown...That is not going to beat Rolex...

I can't give details... but no one will be disappointed in the GS offerings this year!!

Such a great opportunity - the first weak offering from Rolex in a half-decade, and no Swatch, opens the door for GS to steal Basel!!

there are some absolutely Must-haves coming!

The most accurate/insightful comment of the day... there is no way for Seiko to become Rolex without selling its soul.. the hope is that there will be some transference of emotion from the consumer toward the negatives in an industry that looks to take advantage of, rather than provide a service to, the consumer.. it's a long game to win over a generation just by providing a quality product at a fair price.. but when this current generation gets saturated with superficial disingenuous images, items, and displays... quality, integrity, and honesty will become the new "hot" "rare" items... Seiko at least has the investment capitol to play the long game without having to be like your old creepy uncle trying to look cool to the young kids by 'flossing' at the family wedding... or worse, making a hodinkee watch...

I will say I own five GS's with more incoming and I've never had these issues. One of us is just that lucky I guess.

Looking forward to what comes from GS after Baselworld.

If you have a snowflake I'll trade you mine.

I cringe every time I have to set the time (gritty)...but the dial is soo nice.

I have never had a gritty crown on any GS I have owned. You should get it looked at our put some lube on it.

Sorry don't have that one. I have the sbga387 instead that I enjoy. And don't have anything like what you describe.

My big issue with Seiko & GS sports models is their size. I’m pretty much 40 and under, 42 at the absolute most. If they release some smaller sports models I’ll be very interested in purchasing. I’m already in the market for a dressy GS piece.

Interesting you should say that.

The GS I have come across with the best crown action is the very watch I think you used to own....SBGX115...right down to the scratch on bezel between 57' and 58'.. Small world huh? You took some good pics that persuaded me to get it over the black one that was out there preowned simultaneously.

While that SBGX115 crown action is good enough, it's not a triplock in terms of feel, but then again it's half the price.

I still like the watches, but in my opinion GS needs to work on some blocking and tackling to dethrone Rolex in overall quality. ...I don't care about the branding issues..
