Wiggle test?

I've been away for a while. Forgive me, but I've been seeing this here and there and have no idea............

What is the "wiggle test"?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

The wiggle test compares the original GMT 3185 and new 3186 movements. The new 3186 movement has a thicker movement (about an extra 0.4mm) to allow for a de-coupling of the hour hand from the 24 hr GMT hand. When the hour hand is adjusted on the 3185 movement the 24hr hand can be seen to move as the hour hand is adjusted. The new 3186 movement's de-coupling will show little or no movement. The last of the GMT l l's from > Z700000 to the end of the 'M' line were fitted with the 3186 movement and the 'wiggle test' is one check that can confirm this short of opening the case.

D'oh! I guess my 16710 GMT II Z series of March 2008 is not a 3186. When I gently rock the hour hand back and forth, the 24 hr GMT hand also moves.............

The 3186 includes the Parachrom hairspring I understand, and what other innovations?

Merci,

Chris

Wiggle Test

Could you tell me what are the first two numbers after the "Z" are of your "Z" series. I am trying to pin down when the change was made from 3185 to 3186.

The only difference is the in-house hairspring and a change to the location of the 12 hour hand detent mechanism.

The hairspring itself is not why the cal number was changed, but rather the slight change in the mechanics.
