I love the two I got but if prices went stupid crazy, I could see clearing them out and moving to a DD for small additional investment while keeping my 16610, SD43, TT GMTc and Daytona C. Wishful thinking

That is called wishful thinking. First of all nobody knows when will 116610 be updated. I am pretty much sure that won’t happen at Basel 2019. More likely in 2019 we shall get an update of 116710. And Sub will follow suit in at least a couple of years. Secondly again nobody knows whether 116610LV will keep on its existance in the present combination of dial and bezel. Chances are slim. Otherwise 116610LV would have been the same as 16610LV. Thirdly price of future Sub will surely be increased with somewhat between 10 and 30%. Having in mind that Rolex will persist in its policy of making the brand at the top of desirability i am sure everyone will reasoanbly agree that your assumptions are entirely adrift from what we may expect.

I sort of agree that prices of these will just go up, not down. And I think it will take a big world depression to get the current Rolex prices to come down by 10-20%. |

true, but IMO popularity has increased more due to the market than a genuine, organic rise in popularity. Guilty as charged. Last year i passed on one sitting in an AD display case in Houston. Now i want one. I would be lying if i said the fact its hard to get didn't make it more attractive. Not because of resale potential, but because its a challenge.

The 72 hour reserve will not significantly move the market. If you want a Hulk they are there. It is just what you will have to pay.

I don't see them dropping anytime soon. Get now, before they go even higher.

Depends. The biggest factors on moving the needle are going to be the availability of the watch and/or if some major change is made to it @ Baselworld. FWIW, I don't see an updated movement by itself making a whole lot of difference. (OK, that's a purely subjective opinion. I should say it wouldn't make any difference to me.)
And if something major does occur, I wouldn't look at the prices to necessarily drop, either. I remember discussions here about the pre-ceramic Daytona prices that would go in the toilet if a ceramic version was ever released. Hmm...let's see how that turned out.. EDIT: Just saw Neil's response above. Nailed it. |

I don't think much will change from a cost perspective. The inflated costs are (in my opinion) entirely due to perception of demand. As long as Rolex keeps doing whatever it is they are doing, the cost will remain high if it is tricky to get. I walked into an AD a year and half ago and bought one on a whim. You cannot do that today. It wasn't like something dramatically changed about the reference other than its availability.
If Rolex is going to update the Submariner with a new movement, I can't see them changing much aesthetically. The only way I see the LV price coming down (if availability isn't changed) would be if Rolex dramatically changes the case of the Submariner into a "superior" design from the consumer standpoint and older models are viewed as less ideal in some way. Then again, older models become more collectible because they are no longer produced. Who knows? |
