A friend bought a GMT_MASTER II
A friend of mine just bought a new Rolex GMT-MASTER II, from an AD. He was somewhat uncomfortably in purchasing a brand new Rolex with a K prefix serial number. He feels that it will have to go in for service alot sooner because of this. Would you feel the same way?

Not in the slightest... the serial number just means it sat dormant for a while.... It'll be 5 years of normal use before that watch needs to be serviced. Also his warranty started ticking on the day he purchased, so be sure and remind him that if it's not within spec a year and a half from now... he should have them regulate it for him.

My AD told me that watches that are harder to sell and sit in the safe or display too long get sent back to rolex for a service check. Examples would be some DDs and Masterpieces

I mean, with a K series, that watch is at least 4 years old.
I think your friend should really ask for a price reduction or did he already got a good deal on it? And about the service, I don't think it is really an issue. |

He got a good price reduction, and the AD is very reputable, which in my opinion is why he may have a large inventory. I myself always ask what the serial number is. |

However, if I'm looking into a model that had a change in recent years (like the 14060 or 14060M) I don't know if the case is engraved with the M or not, so I feel more of a need to know what it's serial number is...

Well, the fact that the watch most probably has lug-holes differentiates it from the current gmt ii so think it deserves quite a hefty discount even though some may prefer the lug-holes case.

Nothing to worry about. I myself ask about the serial number too. I guess it is meant to be, to get a new watch yet a old series, the watch definitely got more history behind it than the Z series for sure. |

There would be absolutely no difference in history between a K-series and a Z-series GMT-II!!

If he only found out later that the watch was old, then I think he was mislead.
The fact that he was given a discount is not relevant if the diiscount was not clearly associated with the age of the watch. He should complain loudly. The watch was misrepresented, at the very least. |

I just purchased an Explorer I from my AD that had an early F serial number, 2004. He had a few and gave me a real good deal, $600 less, to take the older watch. Side by side there is no difference and the warranty starts on the date of purchase. I take that kind of deal anytime. Bill

the thing here is that k series watches actually have a difference with the latest series.. the lug holes..

If your friend wants a non-lug hole case GMT Master II... let him know I'd trade him for my 2 year old GMT anytime. I actually prefer the lug holes...
