What does a navy Submariner wear?

What's the difference between a Navy Submariner & a Rolex Submariner? A Navy Submariner is rarely seen where as the Rolex Sub can be seen everywhere.
Take a closer peek at what a Commander in the Silent Service wears on the wrist.

Very versatile & reliable 'tool'

Highly recommended for professional applications. Diving to desk duties.

In the US Navy they wear Poopy suits. If you have been there you will know what that is.

There's a submariner in that submarine - was wearing my 16613 in this photo...

Pretty cool submarine display, btw. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_submarine_S-56

awsome pics & an awsome watch.

just out of interest, does a navel commander receive such a watch as standard issue or is it from your personal collection?

thanks

The collection

All watches shown are my personal collection. The Navy no longer provides watches to personnel. I am aware Divers in the past were issued with Longines compressors and the Seiko 6105. In the 1970s Hamilton chronographs were issued to Naval aviators.

I choose the Black Bay for wearability, versatility and reliability. Not to mention killer good looks! On a nylon nato strap is a must at sea, for lightness in weight, durability and fast drying.

I also recently acquired a Pelagos which you probably know is based on the Snowflake models issued to the French Navy. Several reasons why I prefer it over a Rolex Sub for practicality -titanium case, luminous bezel, satin finish, no date cyclops, lower cost. For military seafaring applications the Pelagos is technically superior. Maybe not in looks or value retention but in pure functionality it's a winner. I also personally prefer to wear the crown on the left. Altogether, a better field or tool watch.

I own several other watches as attached.

What does a Submariner do when not under the ocean?

Water sports....diving, snokelling, sailing. Notice the Panerai Submersible I'm wearing in one of the photos?

Yes very cool unless you have served on it. I have been on a Soviet era Russian Foxtrot Submarine. Quite a Spartan existence, even frightening for the bravest submariners.

Comparatively speaking, in Oz a Ferry Captain's salary can be on par with a middle ranking Officer. Depending on experience and years of service, overtime, shift work etc.Commercial airline pilots are on a much better wicket than their Airforce counter parts. And the Transport Minister earns roughly 3 times the Prime Minister. Go figure.
