Sorry to hear this happened. Best to wear long sleeve shirts when out walking the streets, you can always roll your sleeves up if you get hot and roll them down when in dodgy areas. Sounds like a strange manoeuvre they performed on you, guessing you were very drunk and unable to see it coming, resist or run.

P.S They must know their watches as the offshore doesn't even look that flashy!

I always wear long sleeves and this is a great advantage to doing so.

That said, I have to disagree the offshore and any octagonal AP for that matter is very recognizable to thieves.

OP: I am very impressed with your handling of the matter. One of my biggest concerns is this happens to me and being drunk I do something stupid and get myself killed.

At 4am leaving the club you exercised a very clear mind

Agree with above posts, lowlifes... Been to barcelona a couple of times, only wearing rolexes though. Barcelona is like every other mayor city in Europe. Daytime is fine but similar to my hometown Stockholm lowlifes pray outside the popular nightclubs.

In these sorts of cases, is it worth telling the police about it?

If I had to file an insurance claim I would need a copy of the police report.

Barcelona is a beautiful city but horrendous for theft, especially high value watches. As the OP unfortunately found it, it can be pretty blatant as well.

OP you did the right thing by letting them take it, hope that you're ok and the insurance pay out makes a bitter pill a little easier to swallow.

Highly recommend that you do not wear expensive timepieces when out in the city.

Just glad you're OK-that sucks and I'm glad that you're safe and that you have a good head on your shoulders. With my temper it wouldn't have ended the same way and that's a bad thing.

I'm really sorry to hear about this.
I'm glad you're okay. It is a shame that these things are happening so often, and I really hope those thieves get what they deserve for this.

Sadly thieves NEVER get what they deserve only what they desire. Police are not interested and will never investigate or crack down on robbery.

Now we’re approaching summer, be careful wearing expensive watches in public places with short sleeved shirts. Personally, I never wear an expensive watch whilst on holiday outside my hotel.

I hope in OP's case his watch was insured.

Do you normally keep them in the hotel safe?
I have heard of instances where that can also be unsafe, however I suppose it depends on the hotel.
Where I live we fortunately don't worry about theft or robbery, however on my vacation it depends where I am going.
I normally only take 1 watch, and just like you if I feel like I could have a "wild" night, or I may be in a tourist attraction area known for such things, I leave it in the hotel. Still depends where I am vacationing of course.

When traveling to places like that it’s best to bring a cheaper watch like a Seiko, and not a Grand Seiko.

@TopherMins - I'm very impressed how you dealt with this at 4am after a night in the club!

This kind of event is exactly why the watch I wear when I travel is a Panerai 424 "homage". If I lose it I'm out more $ for the DiStefono strap than for the watch.

I heard about a friend who had this in Amsterdam, the thief was alone though.

What i heard is that the guy came up to him ''talking about football'' and did some ''moves'' than they come close and kick you in such a way you get on your knees (fall) and you put automaticaly your arm up! And they rip your watch off. It however did not succeed, he kicked the guy senseless and his friends came quickly and beat the shit out of that guy.

Thief was arrested and everything was on camera's (also around clubs) luckely the police did not use the feed from the cams since the guy and his friends took him good. But probably was released pretty soon... And the thief spoke French if im not mistaken, not looking like a normal bloke from France that is.

It's crazy... I know for sure my insure would'nt cover this.

Glad your okay though

You'll look back on this in a few years and laugh it off. Thankfully you're ok and you were smart enough to just let them take the watch. As the saying goes, "This too shall pass".

Been to Barca several occasions and warned many a time to not wear a decent watch.

Looks like a harmless fun beautiful place but its clearly dodgy for watch theft

I guess it is always a trade off. There may be more petty theft in Barcelona but I don't recall hearing of any nut job school massacres either.

No, that's our specialty.

Barcalona, a world class city, is like any other major tourist hub. And when traveling extra caution is in order, like New York or Chicago. That's no guarantee you won't have any problems but theft can and does happen everywhere.
