Hi Tek, agreed. I think the watch is simply wonderful. An amazing story regarding how he repaired it. It’s one of my favorite threads.

I have noticed rare watches with all service parts closer to the cost of a new watch vs a correct vintage example. In this case I am sure it is worth what was paid for watch/service and dial.

I agree, I think its a wonderful piece. It may in the end be quite divisive, but again this is down to personal taste. I guess time will tell what this beauty is worth. GLWS :-)

On its own, as a watch, in purely aesthetic terms, it does have a certain charm. To me though, this isn't a vintage piece, at least not one that I would seek out or pay strong money for. If it were mine I'd send it to Simon Freece or Bob Ridley and have the lume 'aged' slightly, not coffee/orange but just something a little warmer than the lumi white. I'd then wear it and enjoy it, knowing that you're unlikely to lose much, if anything on it, come resale. However, at 12-15K usd it wouldn't be an easy/quick sell, as IMO the majority of those looking at a Red 1680 are buying it for the dial, an original one that is, that wears its 45+ yrs with pride.

With the sympathetically aged lume, I would probably choose it over the new Rolex equivalent, but that's mainly due to not liking the ceramic models in general.

Either way, if the OP likes it, which he clearly does, then it was a successful exercise. Top marks for perseverance.

I think we have just shit all over the OP's thread...so I'm moving on. I am a vintage watch collector/buyer, these are my opinions based on what I have seen collecting vintage watches for over 30 years. You obviously have a different opinion...If you would actually pay $15,000, then the watch is worth that amount. Until that happens its nothing more than speculation.

Asking 16.3K. A seller can price any watch as he feels. It doesn’t mean it will sell for that. I can’t remeber ever buying a watch for the asking price, nor can I recall selling one for my asking price.

To be sure, here’s another Luminova red going for just $10,850

I don't know about that second one, the guy can't spell the word dial correctly.

As for Chrono24, yup totally agree. We are discussing roughly how much these are worth, when we suggested 15k this seem to make some of the vintage collectors quite emotional in here.

I sourced 2 at the same time, interestingly, one was an early incorrectly tritium marked Luminova dial the second one correctly marked SWISS only.

The service dial and hand set are really nice. Dial chipping is pretty common - this is such a great alternative.

Its a great story about perseverance. In your other thread there were so many people that said it was not worth it and it would no longer be vintage. However, once in a while a red dial turns up and it is toast. What do you do? An original dial is 12-15k. Your whole watch cost you less then that. You also own a red dial 1680 which is a complete Rolex watch in every way for a fraction of the current price. Also the red service dial is rare, perhaps rarer than the vintage dials.

Congrats OP, watch looks great! Nice, wearable 1680 Red. I've considering doing the same thing with a 1680 White (all service Luminova parts).

Just as a point of reference, I've seen 1680 Red's with all service parts sell on eBay for $14K+. I've also seen just the service dial sell for around $4K so there is a market for them.

That Chronocentric ad for the 1680 Red Service is a complete scam, end to end. I think it was discussed in the Watchout section or those emails were previously tagged as scammer's emails. Both the seller and buyer are scammers (my guess, the same scammer). They do that build up credibility/fake "references". Chronocentric is a TERRIBLE sales forum to base anything on. That site has no user registration so scams are rampant there. I've seen days where there 20-30 new ads and half of them were marked as scams, that's just ridiculous.

Those parts cost that much? WOW! Then the OPs choice to have RSC restore this watch was a fantastic decision. It turns out he got a great deal.

Oddly the luminova red dialed watches popped up for sale quite a bit in the last decade. People seem to be hanging onto them now, as they are rare for sale. I have seen one in the past year. The dials must be extremely rare.

Love the look of a nicely serviced sub. It's got a lot more life in it and many more good years ahead of it.

Is it for sale? :P I love the idea of a red sub that is effectively always going to look as good as yours does.
