Icon3 Appreciation of fine craftsmanship on non-watch items?

Hello,

I've been a long-time watch enthusiast but only recently delved into the luxury category after receiving my first Rolex as a present last year. It wasn't until experiencing the Rolex that I began to pay attention to the fine craftsmanship of my 126622 in comparison to the rest of my collection full of Casio Oceanus / Seiko Astrons.

I learned to pay attention to the small details and noticed this habit began to carry over to my inspection and repurchase of my other daily carries such as my wallet, key holder, and even my cellphone to have items that not only 'has many functions' but is a 'nice' experience to use. I talked about this preference change to some of my watch enthusiast friends and some told me they don't care about these details on non-watch objects.

This got me curious, what are each of your opinions on having nice daily carries and if you put more weight on craftsmanship on certain items over others? I personally put a lot of weight on having a nice smartphone because it gets at least as much attention as my watch gets daily, but lowering the quality of my next wallet purchase is negotiable because really I don't interact with it that much.

My OCD makes me look at the craftsmanship of everything but few things have the attention to detail as watches.

Sorry Dave.......

I really do like them though.

My original 5 pairs of crew socks actually lasted under daily washing for just over four years. I sent them in and was credited for the original purchase price under warranty. Then applied that toward new ones.

Over the last year I have purchased even more to include no shows socks and white ones for wear with sneakers. I currently wear their thickest pair even now during summer and they are extremely comfortable. Their thickest pair T4033 TACTICAL BOOT EXTRA CUSHION are about $30.00 a pair . 5 pairs to to rotate during the course of the week works extremely well for me. Darn Tough does not usually have sales but Socksaddict.com will but even at full price these socks have been more than worth it to me. They aint cheap but they work extremely well for me.

I can absolutely relate ...

I just ordered this leather jacket from Himel Brothers, (not my photo obviously). The quality, craftsmanship attention to detail is out of this world. Bespoke and 8-10 weeks for delivery, cant wait!

My wife and I also appreciate quality furniture

I have two chairs in my house I use one in my living room or recliner and the other in my office. Both are some of the most expensive furniture I own. My bed being the only thing more expensive.

I'm the same.... it means spending more, sometimes a lot more, but the pleasure of owning something that's well made is very rewarding.

But it's annoying when you lose a $500 umbrella - which I have done.

Nice first post. Yes, there are many things that can give the joy of appreciating quality and craftsmanship. Most people though, don't care or even notice. Unfortunately.

My wife didn't get it, initially, when we started dating. Now, she wears a Rolex and drives a BMW. People can change.

Another obsession of mine.
Way too many to list but I have Plisson that I quite like as well. Although I like my Saponificio Varesino brush with the pewter rim the best along with my three gorgeous Simpson brushes. Don't even get me started on razors and soaps/croaps/creams/etc. Ugh!

I think a lot of it is how much disposable income you have.

Then you sort of pick and choose what you "treat yourself" to, quality-wise.

Some things I own are high quality and some aren't and I don't care that much about. If I had unlimited resources I'd probably go top quality all the way on everything.

I do think that sometimes we can also fetishize objects and get carried away with possessions. Say for example if you chose to downzsize, or live on a boat. Would you really want or need all the stuff that comes down the pike. Then we'd probably just chose to have a very limited number of "nice" things.

none of what I have is needed at all, however my health is really the only thing that really matters honestly..

i appreciate fine craftsmanship, but often find that i'm disappointed when i seek it out and base a purchase decision on it. at this point, i just look for good quality and expect some flaws. save a lot of money doing that.

But even if you don't have as much disposable income, the better choices you make things which have been made better can last much longer. They age and look better longer as well. Keep replacing cheaper things and you can spend as much if not more.

Most of my sound system is hand made...

The wood cases and hand built, the Magnequest transformers are custom made and hand wound, the Capacitors in the circuit are hand built and of course the preamp and amplifiers are hand built.

even my speakers, while machine cut, are hand assembled and hand finished... all right here in Hope Arkansas, USA.

My Mojo and Poly with Campfire Audio Polaris seem quite understated in comparison, but the sound I get from them is extraordinary.

I love the hand made Hi fi eqpt and hi end stuff above, keep em coming fellas, it's what dreams are made of.
