Smaller watches

I love watches, I have a SS Submariner date, SS DateJust, Seiko Sarb033, and other watches. I’m always curious what other men are wearing on their wrist. Walking in NYC, I’ve noticed smaller watches are making a comeback. I rarely see those huge, gaudy, watches anymore. That’s a good thing. I’m not sure if it’s true. However, I was told the 41mm Rolex DateJust wasn’t selling like they hoped. I tried one on, and quickly said NO, doesn’t look right. My 36mm DJ is one of my favorite watches. I actually wear it more than my Submariner.

Will larger, but not ridiculous, watches remain the trend (42mm - 39), or will watches retreat to 34 - 39. Who knows? My guess is that 40mm will remain the new norm, and any watch in that area will be worn.

Was a big fan of 42-44mm sports watches (DSSD, AP ROO, Panerais) but recently I’ve been gravitating towards smaller sizes (38-40mm). Maybe the large watch trend is slightly dying down or I’m just getting older and prefer more classic sized watches.

Watch: what's on my wrist
Posts: 575
I like both large and small. Most of the time I'm wearing my 5066 that's 34. Then if in the mood wear my DSblue. But on thing is very certain smaller watches like my 5066 with a composite strap is pure comfort. Why I forget its on my wrist.

IMO 41 is a bit much for a Datejust. Seems like 40 or less for "dressier" pieces and 40+ for sportier is the right calculus. Hence 40 is the sweet spot.

I have never been a fan of big (>42mm) watches either. It's an aesthetic thing for me. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

All this being said, I would kill for a blue-dialed SS Sky Dweller...

Huge and Gaudy are subjective terms, but among the younger crowd (the few wearing watches) I see lots of those generic Chinese cased things like MVMT, Daniel Wellington etc. All wear big, 44mm+ and all look the same to me. Same case, same lugs, same dial, plenty of cheap looking gold plating.

I don't see small watches at all. Generic Chinese junk, or the usual 40-47mm that we all discuss here. I see the occasional small Patek, but that's rare.

I think it’s obviously a function of your wrist size. You can “like” whatever you want.... but if your wrist is too small its gunna look wrong. I think the Datejust 41 looks more like 39-40 to me. I have a 7.25” wrist. If it was 6.25”. I would wear a 36.

My preference has always been 34mm to 40mm, but fashion trends have forced me to go up to 42mm for some watches, but ultimately the deciding factors are styling and how the watch wears.

Same. Although except for my speedy, the 42's rarely see any wrist time these days. I wear a 34 most weekdays but 36-38 is my sweet spot.

I think 38-40 is the sweet spot.

Every time I wear my 36mm Day-Date (18239 in white gold) my wife says it looks small on me, regardless if I wear it on bracelet or strap.

Prefer 5 digits Sub/SD and 4 digit DJ and OP.

The Oyster precision its like not wearing a watch, light and small, a joy to wear.

I have never been accused of being a follower of fashion mind.

Agreed, I am seeing the same thing.

As all things jewelry or fashion related, watch sizes come and go in fashion. I always thought the big huge panerai look was a fad that would die out and we are seeing that happen,

The older smaller Rolex watches will have a huge comeback

36mm - 40mm is my preference on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. I’m looking to add the 2019 silver dial, 36mm DJ to my collection. I’m just not sure about the white gold fluted bezel. I prefer the understated look of a smooth bezel, and oyster bracelet. My AD has a nice selection of DJ.
