I think it's funny when people try to generalize about the generations that they are not a part of.
While that's fair, your personal observation that millenials like steel doesn't preclude that they could also like something else.

Some folks in this thread seem to be assuming that the popularity of steel precludes a "comeback" from two-tone. Those aren't at all incompatible ideas. Two-tone was never the most popular style, and a "comeback" wouldn't put it on top -- it just has to be more popular now than it was a few years ago, when you didn't see it much at all.

It's also worth noting that the current popularity of steel could easily be part of a resurgence in two-tone. Consider the factors you described about why millenials prefer steel -- how many of those factors might lead to two-tone taking interest away PM watches, resulting in a "comeback" for two-tone?

Purely anecdotally, I'm seeing a lot more two-tone on wrists now than I did five years ago. I'm also seeing it dominantly in sports models (and on younger wrists), which suggests that it's part of the current fashion trend and not a holdover.

Rolex didn't release a two-tone Sea-Dweller because they thought no one wanted it.

Think it depends on the model - for example, a two-tone Date-Just gives off the "just played 18 holes in my retirement community" vibe while the GMT CHNR is an incredibly attractive piece in its own right. The former indicates the owner couldn't afford an all precious metal watch while the latter piece communicates a certain sense of elan.

That may be critical but believe that view is where consensus is at. Obviously fashion/tastes/preferences/trends are cyclical but I would bet we are many years (>decade) away from a reversion in popularity. Also have to factor in the absolute mania surrounding stainless steel watches which invariably provides a rising tide to otherwise left-for-deal two-tone Rolex models.

So this is my first post because I just got my first Rolex - the Bluesy - a few days ago. I am a millennial fwiw. I didn't really know anything about the SS shortage before I walked into my AD, but I had gone over practically every Rolex model online and decided the one I wanted the most was the Bluesy (and this was me foolishly thinking any model I saw I could walk in and buy, including SS Daytonas, haha).

Now I walked into my AD, who I have done a good deal of business with (engagement ring, weddings bands, necklace, etc.) and told him I was interested in a Rolex Sub. He said that's gonna be really hard to get and then I mentioned I wanted a two-tone and he breathed a sigh of relief. He got me the Bluesy within a couple weeks. What's funny is hearing that the SS models were all very hard to get did make me sort of want one, but I just can't imagine anything looking as good on my wrist as the Bluesy.

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t know that TT’s are really getting more popular, they are just available.

Hardly available these days. The last handful of times I’ve visited my AD they had zero two tone sports models of any kind. Crazy world we live in.

I’ll meet you half way, when there are sport models available they are TT, rarely SS.

Yes, crazy world.

Never really been a two tone guy even when they were considered hot. But the better question is, did they ever really go out of style?? I mean the people who like it have always liked it.

I'm in the boat of buying TT because there was no way I was going to pay over RRP for SS and at the time there was no way my any AD was going to sell me a SS Daytona.

I've come to actually like the TT. I got me a white dial TT Daytona.

I haven't seen more in the wrist of individuals, but the watches availability is more apparent due to the popularity of the other models.
Certainly has a place in the hearts of many. Just not me!

TT Sales have gone up but thats probably because of the scarcity of the SS models folks really want.

I think the increase in Two-Tone watches are a result of lack of SS only options honestly.

Not that I dislike Two-tone; I owned a 16613. Actually the Center links are what got me craving a full gold piece.

But If you go in for a Sub or GMT and the only option are the Two-tone GMT for a little more than the SS version, but less than the Grey Market SS price, it makes sense to buy the Two-Tone.

The blue is actually really nice on the 116613.

Also, I dig the RG/SS GMT Rootbeer as well.

So maybe it's a combination of the two. Good looking 6 digits, and lack of SS availablity.

I agree with this somewhat, but TT is still going to be more than a grey market no date sub by about $5k. If you want a more in demand model, you can get the Hulk grey for about the same as a TT sub at an AD.

I think a lot of people just like the look of two-tone, especially the 116613LB and 126711CHNR, which are both very striking. At least that's the case for me.

Again, don't think this really makes sense. You can get a grey market sub for a good deal less than a TT at an AD and the Hulk for about the same price. If you want one of the SS GMTs, I don't see why you wouldn't pay a little more to get one grey instead of buying a TT at an AD. I think there are just a lot of people who genuinely like TT.

Are two tone watches making a come back?

I had a two tone DJ 36 (American Psycho version) but finally traded it in. I never felt it was out of style; I felt it was the essential Rolex which most people had in their minds eye when they thought of Rolex. I just purchased a two tone Daytona and really like it. It's a beautiful watch and I'd wear it regardless of how stylish or not it was.
