If the purchase is reasonable for you from a financial standpoint, do it and don’t think twice. There are few “affordable” luxuries in life; in my opinion, a Rolex is one of them.

I have learned the hard way that life can change very quickly. Get the watch and make yourself happy. Who gives a **** what anybody else thinks!

If you have the money, sure. You could always sell later if you regret it. It would be a bummer to buy something so nice that you're afraid to wear it anywhere though.

You've been a Rolex forum member for almost a year, have over 100 posts and don't own a Rolex yet. It's clearly a dream & passion to own one. Get it if you are OK financially to get one. Even if your wife if right and you'll get bored of it and sell it, at least you gave it a shot and scratched a real itch. If you can't drive yourself to get one, you are only torturing yourself by being here.

Being a jerk (like judging people based on their material possessions and not their character) makes you a jerk. Buying a nice watch just shows you have good taste. Buy what you want if finances allow.

I feel like I could have written the first post. The first watch you treat as an investment the second one you treat as a watch!

This post has many months now, you’re 50+, life is too short, buy what you want as long as you can afford it.

$10k, 20k€, £30k .... no matter

Nothing like the satisfaction of getting what you want .

You can work hard all the time. You need enjoyments to celebrate your achievements along the way.

I also thought very hard prior to my purchase of my sd43. Now i want another watch.

Did the OP buy it yet?

I did not read the entire post.

I have SS Rolexes bought years ago that are now hard to obtain. Pull the trigger when you can.

Only thing that would make you a jerk would be if you went around flashing your $11k watch in front of people and making sure everyone around you saw it.

am I a jerk for thinking about buying an $11k Rolex?

At 50 a SD50! Perfect. I’m almost 48 and I respect my father. He would say not to buy an expensive watch. I have a box of them. I learned a lot from my dad, but my taste is above his personal tastes... he spends thousands on guns and for him it’s ok...next 03/08/18 my daughter is going to birth - I have a 3 year old son too- and ‘m getting a SD50 for me and engrave it with our names on it. That is what I will do!!

Congrats on the watch!

I completely understand taking into consideration the thoughts of family and friends, especially when it comes to things like watches, which is often seen as wasteful and unnecessary, I've been through it too.

Something you should remember is their opinion is simply their opinion, it's not less or more important than your opinion, it's simply their opinion, and all of our opinions don't need to be the same.

I have friends and family that wouldn't buy the things I do, and I never go out of my way to justify any of my purchases to them. If someone I know thinks I've wasted money I don't try to explain myself.... "well, it does this... and the history... and I use it for this"...because it really doesn't matter if they agree with my purchase or not. I let them have their opinion and leave it at that, I know what I like and that's enough for me.

You seem to have a lot of “no’s” from other people’s perspectives in your original post.

I guess you’ve got to decide if their opinions are important to you or if you want it for it. Good luck. Only you will be able to decide that.

Only if it takes food off the table or causes the power to be turned off in your house.

Otherwise....go for it and enjoy!

Simple advice: If you buy a Rolex and hide it from friends and family or from getting robbed while wearing the watch, get a Timex, Otherwise, let your heart be your conscience.

haha I like that.

hmmm yeah. This thread is from 10/2017, and the OP has the SD43 in his profile, so I think he took the jerk route folks!

Congrats to the another jerk! Amazing watch.

I am the same way. I love nice things, don’t flaunt it, but it’s for
myself. 11 k for a Rolex, yes crazy, but have you seen the amount of junk people have in their garages. I bet all that crap ain’t worth a thing, but add up to well over 11 k when bought new. A Rolex is really not the best financial decision, but probably not the worse one. Enjoy your watch, and I have had a Daytona for 7 years and it has not gotten old. Let’s see what happens if I ever get my LV! Will post back in 6 months.

Most of these issues go away if you buy used and are confident the price for such a used watch won’t go further down in the future bc it’s a Rolex (which is a pretty good assumption).

Buy the damn thing and don't worry about critics. Wear it like you stole it and don't worry about damage, it'll take it. Diving to depth? You'll give up long before you reach the max depth of the watch.

Uhhhggg "Rich" guys don't always cheap it up... even the ones that are cheap in other ways. Nobody made wealth by wearing a cheap watch. Period. or cheap car. It was other aspects of their lives and decision making processes that got them there or just damn hard work.
