Over or underrated.... the Omega I mean?

The Soviet Sturmanskie was the first watch in space and the Strella/Sekonda were as good as the Omega.

Over rated Rolex...lols. I don't believe any Rolex is over rated. Everyone has different needs, tastes and budgets.
If any Rolex is over rated than they can all be over rated. To me a seriously over rated watch is the 5711, a ss steel watch you can't even hack and no special features other than one super power...it's name PP. But that's neither here nor there.

Over rated means over hyped.

If this forum is a yardstick to go by in the last couple of years then it would have to be the ceramic Daytona’s and the BLNR.

Does it mean they’re no good? Absolutely not. They’re fine watches and most people would be proud to own one.

Do I personally think they deserve the hype? No. I don’t. Neither are for me but that’s just my personal taste in watches.

Ah yes, the old, never to be forgotten Sturmanskie.
They certainly showed those Gnomes a thing or two.

It's a watch Yuri, but not as we know it.

I agree with many here, the Daytona, to me, is over-hyped and over-rated. Super busy dial, no date and a Chrono that rarely gets used. I had one and flipped it a month after the purchase. Couldn't read the dial half the time.
The BLNR is my 2nd choice just because I hate the color combo. That matte sky blue just doesn't work for me.
Most underated would have to be the green Milgauss. I finally saw one live recently and loved everything about it. The size is just right for a larger wrist like mine but not too large. The colors just work and you could wear it anywhere. That watch is just beautiful!

I kinda feel this way, too. I hesitate to judge it because it's hard to know any watch's true appeal without living with it a bit, but sometimes I feel a bit baffled by the level of demand for it.

Couldn't DISAGREE more. The black-bezeled GMT will never measure up to the bi-colored bezel GMTs.
1. Historically speaking, the classic Rolex GMTs have always had bi-colored bezels. The all-black bezeled GMT was not even offered until the early 1970s.
2. Functionally speaking, the bi-colored bezels are superior. The bi-colored bezels are not merely decorative, but actually serve a useful purpose providing a helpful visual separation between day and night for the GMT feature.
3. Technologically speaking, the bi-colored GMTs also beat the all-black bezeled GMTIIc. The original all-black GMTIIc was actually a design compromise by Rolex. Rolex had wanted to release a ceramic version of the more classic and useful (and therefore more popular) bi-colored bezel GMTII for the 50th Anniversary of the GMT but in 2005 Rolex did not yet have the technology to make bi-colored ceramic bezels, so Rolex settled for an all-black bezeled GMTIIc. The BLNR release in 2013 was the first bi-color ceramic GMT and accordingly represents a technological breakthrough over the all-black bezel version.

The only thing I like more about black-bezeled GMTII vs. the bi-colored GMTs has nothing to do with the watch itself -- but is simply the fact that the LN has (until this point) basically escaped a silly nickname. To remove this lone advantage, I will hereafter refer to the LN as the "Black Panther". There, now they are all equally "cartoonish".

There you have it. The "men" will always want the superior watch, which is clearly a bi-colored bezel GMT IIc. For my money, I'd probably take an Explorer II over the GMTII LN.

Re: overrated against WHAT:

It's not about quality.

At this level when I think overrated, it's all about hype/ desirability VS. style/design and what I like to look at and don't get tired of...after an extended period of time.

Hence, certain colored dials and busyness in the dial are an absolute no go. I get tired easily of those characteristics in a watch. They all start to blend and make my eyes glaze over and/or get tired. LOL

Of course, everyone's criteria is different.

For the money I don’t believe you can get a better watch so none are overrated.

Perhaps there should be the most underrated?

I go Oyster Perpetual. First automatic and water proof watch and still in production. Total classic.

Another vote for the Daytona. I had a 116520 for a few months. To me it felt light and small, and it was very difficult to read.

This.

Plus PCL, no date, screw pushers, legibility issues/lack of contrast, lack of glide lock, etc.

So when the AD finally calls I’ll definitely buy one. ;)

The white 116500 at $20K plus is overrated but at $12.4 it's a steal.

So many Daytona on the list, but yet all of you are on the wait list for it hahaha. Too funny.

Overrated is definitely the Daytona; they plopped a ceramic bezel on a 116520 (plus a subtle dial change) and the world has gone mad. I had the Daytona and sold it not too long ago while the grey market is really hot and don't really regret it at all.

However, nothing is more overrated than the 5711 or any Richard Mille.

Stainless Daytona by a mile. Everyone wants one simply because they are so hard to obtain. Dial is busy and hard to read and the watch wears extremely small, nothing like a Sub or GMT. Over rated to the max.

But for some reason people love it.

Don’t get me wrong. I do too. And I’ve had my fair share of them. They sure are pretty. And the size and comfort is super.

But I ultimately decided they are not for me based on reasons stated above.

Very potentially, arguably, the most desirable watch in the world. For me, yes...highly overrated.

You forgot about the seven! lines of text in the dial, which just contribute to the poor legibility. I have one, but it didn’t grow on me.

Actually, FWIW it’s water-resistant only to the depth of 63m with the pushers unscrewed (per Peter, aka Padi56)
100m with pushers screwed down

I disagree with all those saying the Daytona 116500! After owning my 116500LN for over a week I absolutely love it and can't keep it off my wrist. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who never even considered the Daytona I've alway been a diver watch kind of guy. My only complaint is getting use to not having the date function that all my other watches have.

Check back in and give us a status report on the love affair in 6 months. Let's see if you still feel the same way!
